I'll go with Archie, except for: I wouldn't take Smalling, Lampard or Wellbeck, and I wouldn't leave Cole on standby, he'd still be my first choice, but I'd still take Baines who I really rate, not only as a left back but as a professional too. Defoe goes instead of Wellbeck for me, I've said why I'd include him many times so I won't bore anyone with that. It's about time we ditched Lampard, he's been a decent goal scoring midfielder, but he offers bugger all else, even more so these days. Not sure who I'd take in his place though, Ron Benson or Tony Hedges probably!

I agree with Defoe but I'd definitely take Welbeck, every time I see him play for England he seems to use his height and pace to cause loads of problems for opposing defenders.
Agree with Lampard, doesn't offer enough anymore.
Cole I'm torn with, I would personally start Baines as I simply think he's better but with emerging talent such as Luke Shaw's it's the perfect time to distance ourself from the 'old guard' so to speak!

In view of the fact that I've used the 'old guard' argument for my exclusion of Lampard, that's a very fair comment regarding Cole, Fudgie.
I think you're right to be honest, I'd rather see us start planning for the future now. Friendlies do bugger all these days, particularly with exclusions of players who get mysterious 'knocks' before them. Tournament football is where you should blood your new players nowadays, right in where it matters.
Besides which, we're not a minnow footballing nation, any player the manager takes, he should already know that they're made of the right stuff, barring one or two calculated risks.

To add to my issue with friendly internationals, I think they should be scrapped and get-togethers should be coaching sessions only. In place of these matches and for the purpose of ranking points, how about FIFA/UEFA organising Summer mini international leagues around the confederations during every odd year (2015, 2017 etc)? Draw teams straight out of the hat and tell them to get on with it.
It may sound daft to some, and maybe I've not explained it right, but I think I've got the general idea across, which is to get away from the friendlies played during the season, so managers are not faced with late withdrawals from the squad and are then able to build a decent side for the future by being able to partner new blood alongside their preferred established players in a competitive environment where the players are not mindful of missing the next vital league game for their clubs.

Great idea Gazza.
Even a semi-competitive tournament like the four nations cup would be good!

I tried to make a squad where the old guard were on standby and the younger players got the nod for the main squad. Some players get in because they are cover in more than one position but they are generally the ones who will be on the bench.

I saw that, I just think it's time to leave Lampard out altogether, but as Fudgie quite rightly pulled me up on, Cole should also follow suit if we're going to truly move forward with this. They're going to be too old to be included at all soon, so it could be argued that including them until that day comes is wasting valuable building time, and denying younger players the chance to shine while they're young enough and c o c ky** enough (for want of a better word) to take it all in their stride. **Had to space it out to beat the swearage filter!

Gazza, isn't there going to be a Nations League as of 2018 that replaces boring friendlies? I'm sure i heard recently it's either been given the go ahead of they've all voted for it?

No idea, mate, I have honestly never read or heard of the idea anywhere before, it just came to me earlier. If it is going to happen, then brilliant, someone finally knows what they're doing!
