Once more unto the match report! Written today from the beach whilst enjoying Día de Santos off school. The game started brightly for El Palo with two more inglés boosting the crowd (parents of one of the crew!). Good pressure from the outset resulted in an a couple of good opportunities for the hosts. One especially when the left winger squared instead of shooting and the keeper did really well to spread himself and block the shot. After just ten minutes Maracena were already playing hoofball, as the half progressed the game became increasingly physical. Two minutes before half time I said to one of the inglés go to the bar, as we have a habit of scoring when she goes and yes you’ve guessed it. A great challenge in the middle, followed by some clever footwork lead to a delicious ball to the left winger Vázquez inside his fullback. First time, outside of the left boot, curled into the far corner - yes I was right behind it! Gooooooooooollllll. Then Claire came back with beer. Life doesn’t get much better! Second half we maintained steady pressure hitting both posts and drawing some good saves from the keeper. Into the last ten minutes and still only one goal in it. Keep a clean sheet and we maintain our impeccable home record and top spot. They managed their one shot of note in the entire game but the keeper handled it comfortably. On rolls the promotion bus! Marbella managed a good victory to maintain the two point gap; Arenas drew to fall to fourth and four points behind; meanwhile Jaén won again to move into third three points adrift. Next week sees us visit athletic porcupines! Written from the beach.... some people have all the fun......

I snuck that in quietly… And they have just posted the highlights!! Some wayward shooting from the boys, but that goal had a touch of Davor Suker about it - a quality finish! Cheers for posting, Duds.

This weekend sees El Palo undertaking a short hop to the depths of Jaén, a round trip of more than 400 km! Which considering we are in one of 16 regional leagues is quite some distance. We are in Porcuna playing the mighty Athletic Porcupines. Last season was their best ever at this level with a ninth place finish. However, the close season saw some massive changes with a new coach and several first team players leaving. Where did they go? El Palo!!!!! Campana’s campaign (expat joke as that is the manager’s name and it translates as campaign!) continues this week as we look for a fifth consecutive victory and to maintain our incredible defensive record. They have had a mixed season so far, with two victories and a defeat in their first three games, followed by a draw and another victory. However they have lost three in a row since then and will be looking to stop the rot. To do that though they will have to beat the mighty Paleños!

A bit like our having to schlep across to visit Lowestoft as so-called regional opponents!
¡Vamos, Paleños!

The trip to Porcuna is over, how did El Palo get on against the pesky porcupines? Well it was, as to be expected, a tough battle and despite having the better of the first half with some opportunities the scoreline at half time was goalless. Would our boys manage to achieve the unthinkable and win a fifth game on the bounce without conceding? Sadly this was not to be the case. Within seconds of the restart Sergio Esteban finished off a move with his head to score his second of the season and give the mighty Paleños the lead! We then dominated the play for the next twenty minutes which terminated in Ibra Balde scoring his second of the season and our second of the game. Out of respect for our hosts, from whom we signed him in the summer, he did not celebrate the goal. Just ten minutes our young striker Destiny scored, unfortunately it was in ‘propria puerta’ an own goal and thus our incredible run of wins without conceding has finished. However, we held out comfortably until the end of the game and now sit proudly at the top of the table with eight wins from nine matches. Marbella lost surprisingly at Torreperogil and early challengers Arenas lost at home for the first time in two years, this was though to Jaén who are now second in the table and sit three points behind the mighty El Palo. Next weekend there are no games as it is the first round proper of the Copa del Rey. As a side note each time we play away the opposition post pictures on social media of how perfectly clean El Palo leave the changing rooms. It’s the little things that show who you really are!

This weekend will see the blue army return to home soil for their only November home game at midday on Sunday . Our next opponents are Elvis’ favourites ‘Viva’ Huétor Vega. It is a small town on the southern outskirts of Granada capital. In fact Granada CF’s home ground is closer to the town than it is to Alhambra Palace in Granada city centre! Our perfect home record of played four, won four, scored ten and conceded zero is on the line. Huétor Vega are in ninth position with thirteen points and have had a very mixed season with three wins, four draws and two defeats so far. Their last game should sound a warning as they defeated Torre del Mar 3-0. The pregame statistical analysis courtesy of BeSoccer (the Spanish version of Opta) suggests a 61% chance of an El Palo victory and just 17.5% for Huétor Vega. Football is of course won on the pitch not a spreadsheet! One of the El Palo inglés posse is not available this weekend and so my good lady is taking advantage to catch her first game. Should we not win, or even concede, she will obviously be banned from the ground permanently…

Fingers crossed for the win, Duds and fear not, I'll be getting straight on change.org to start a petition to get the club to issue a banning order for your good lady!
