So, after giving the big build up what happened? Quite simply for 45 minutes the two sides cancelled each other out in the middle of the pitch with few chances of real note being created. Although obviously the best of these were created by the Paleño boys! After the break the hosts came more into the game and the game itself became more physical. Cue two bookings in seven minutes seeing our midfield maestro Ibra receive his marching orders just before the hour mark! As you would expect things became more difficult… or they would have done, had a long lofted ball through the middle, not been ignored by the Torre del Mar defence allowing Ivan Acosta to place a looped header in the corner of the net just eight minutes later!
Despite some huffing and puffing Benito del Valle in our goal had no serious saves to make. Then with nine minutes to go a long through ball found Ivan Acosta once more and he hammered home the finish! Mayhem time from the bench and a two nil victory for the visiting giants!
Marbella and Jaén both won but the leaders Arenas lost 4-0 at Almería B meaning that we are top of the league with a goal difference of plus ten helped by five clean sheets in six games!
Next week Málaga City, who are not based in Málaga city but in fact Almuñécar which is 50 miles away!

Acosta looks to be a very accomplished finisher if those two goals are anything to go by!
Another fantastic win, Duds - cheers for sharing!

This weekend sees the El Palo machine march on to FC Malaga City based in Almuñécar but who actually play in the town of Nerja. The place with the famous caves. They are in the style of Glen Hoddle’s La Manga Academy and they generally recruit 16-23 year olds who haven’t made it and give them a second chance. It is a franchised operation with branches across the globe. They have won two successive promotions to reach this level and have slightly adjusted their model to sustain their status. Amongst their squad this season are in fact four ex El Palo players! They started the season with a 0-1 home defeat to Marbella and then won 1-0 in their second match m. This was followed by three more defeats and last week they managed a 1-1 draw with Málaga B in which the keeper was their stand out performer. As the home ‘fans’ (they share a ground with CD Nerja) have not yet seen a point gained this should be a good opportunity for El Palo to consolidate their table topping position. But football is not played on paper so who knows!

So what happened then? Well, as always with the El Palo massive, rather a lot! The start of the game saw almost nothing of attacking intent from the hosts and during a dominant first period there were two El Palo goals disallowed for offside. The first from the highlights is difficult to tell (I think on) but close; the second is clearly on… I think we know what happens when a team dominates a half completely but fails to score a ‘legitimate’ goal. Including also a ‘Duran special’ where he shoots from halfway. (He has scored twice like this in the three years I have been following El Palo) But no! We made it half time without conceding! Cue the second half and Malaga City came back into the game more without really creating anything of real danger. Despite our best efforts, with eight minutes to go the game was still goalless. What could possibly happen next… well of course the mighty travellers scored not one, not two but three goals without reply! A final result of 0-3 extends out lead at the top as Marbella could only draw 3-3. Therefore with 6 wins and clean sheets and one reverse we are two points clear at the top of the table. This is in fact the best start to a season in all the years El Palo have been at this level or higher! Next match home and time to dance the macarena as we face Maracena who have three draws and four defeats to their name.

Fantastic, Duds, what a season so far. The way they get forward quickly and in numbers is seriously impressive, and I think it'll take a special performance to stop them!
I couldn't see anything wrong with those two disallowed goals myself, mate, I can only assume a poor linesman incorrectly giving offside?

The speed at which they break in numbers is exhilarating as indeed is their desire to continue to score!!

This Sunday sees us return to the Nuevo San Ignacio for the first time in three weeks and, with only one home game in November ( the 20th), let’s hope it goes well enough to fill me with happy memories!
Our opponents are UD Maracena. (ah oooh the macarena...) Will Sunday’s midday kick off see us extending our 100% home winning streak - scoring nine without conceding a single goal? Will UD Macarena manage to register their first victory of the campaign? They have only troubled the scoreboard once this season during a 2-2 draw with Motril (whom we beat 3-0) and one of their other 0-0 draws was against Huracán Melilla (4-0 El Palo opening game!) Will we dance to victory or will they stand on our toes and deny us the opportunity to extend our best ever start to a season?
All will be revealed…

Once more unto the match report! Written today from the beach whilst enjoying Día de Santos off school. The game started brightly for El Palo with two more inglés boosting the crowd (parents of one of the crew!). Good pressure from the outset resulted in an a couple of good opportunities for the hosts. One especially when the left winger squared instead of shooting and the keeper did really well to spread himself and block the shot. After just ten minutes Maracena were already playing hoofball, as the half progressed the game became increasingly physical. Two minutes before half time I said to one of the inglés go to the bar, as we have a habit of scoring when she goes and yes you’ve guessed it. A great challenge in the middle, followed by some clever footwork lead to a delicious ball to the left winger Vázquez inside his fullback. First time, outside of the left boot, curled into the far corner - yes I was right behind it! Gooooooooooollllll. Then Claire came back with beer. Life doesn’t get much better! Second half we maintained steady pressure hitting both posts and drawing some good saves from the keeper. Into the last ten minutes and still only one goal in it. Keep a clean sheet and we maintain our impeccable home record and top spot. They managed their one shot of note in the entire game but the keeper handled it comfortably. On rolls the promotion bus! Marbella managed a good victory to maintain the two point gap; Arenas drew to fall to fourth and four points behind; meanwhile Jaén won again to move into third three points adrift. Next week sees us visit athletic porcupines!
