Am I the only one (probably) who watched Team Great Britain triumph in the Speedway of Nations (basically World Pairs)?
The event was held at the new Kirkmanshulme stadium which is the National Speedway Stadium and home to The Belle Vue Aces... Fun Fact: I was born not very far from the old (wooden) Belle Vue Stadium and my Gran lived very near it too.
So, as hosts, we were seeded straight through to the Final against Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Latvia and the Auld Enemy Australia.
And slow starting but strong finishing Great Britain beat Australia in the final race.... doesn't get much better than that really.

Yes, saw that AC.
Used to love nights at the old wooden fire hazard that was Belle Vue Raceway. Preferred the stock car nights though. My favourite - Number 2 Willie Harrison. He had a Morris Minor shell on a lorry base with a huge chevrolet engine under the bonnet. Stuart Smith from Rochdale was always a good watch as well.

I went to the stock cars a few times myself when I was a kid and I can vouch for this, Gaffer, it was great fun!

I was there the night that Willie Harrison (finally) won The Big One - the 1982 World Final, (2nd Mike Close, 3rd Dave Berresford, 4th Len Wolfendon and 5th The Maestro, the One and Only Stu Smith). Fantastic stadium that. Gladiatorial, especially under the lights, and THE NOISE!!! All those big Yankee engines made the ground shake, no thoughts of silencers in those days. And, Of Course, the 1984 World Final where Super Stu showed why he was called The Maestro, coming from way back on the grid and having a terrific scrap with Big Dave Mellor. Awesome stuff. Even now I find myself cheering him on and getting goose bumps. This is worth 15 minutes of anyone's time and beats the F1 Grand Prixs into a cocked hat.

Thjs is what I guess you'd call fan footage, filmed from the Pop Side, so a different camera angle and you can make out where Dave Berresford gets the flat tyre that finished his race. Plus you get the noise from the Fans as The Maetro does his thing....
