Yesterday's game had that end of season feeling all over it even though there are still 4 games left.
Short of players due to suspensions and the Mayweather/Macgregor fight taking place at the same time, we had 3 under 18s players (who'd already played) helping us out.
The other team had a proper warm up and went back in the changing rooms for a team talk while we were still putting the nets up. Only a short warm up and a rushed team talk later and we were off. I wasn't feeling confident at all.
Luckily the other team weren't up to much and we went 2-0 up early on with a great strike with the outside of the foot and a header from a corner. It was a very quiet game for me with just a couple of jittery moments. Some good work up front made it 3-0 and we were cruising to half time. A free-kick from halfway was hit long. I didn't come for it as there was 2 defenders and 2 attackers underneath it. The slightest touch by any of them could've made me look stupid. It cleared everyone and bounced into the box. One defender had a chance to clear it as I shouted "Away" but seemed to lose his footing leaving the striker to blast a shot in off the inside of the far post. Clean sheet gone, 3-1 at half-time.
I didn't have much to do in the second half apart from making myself look big while they blasted their chances wide or over. I palmed away a corner and parried a shot from a tight angle. We got the fourth goal and it was game over.
Hopefully back to the 45s this weekend at centre-back to try and finish the season on a high.

I know it's disappointing to lose a clean sheet, mate, but a win is a win! Besides, you can only do so much, and by the sound of it the guy found exactly the right angle with his shot to get it in off the post, so it sounds like one of those where you just have to take your hat off to the striker and ask your defenders "Wtf happened there?"!

The 2018 season starts on Easter Monday with the preliminary cup round.
We've got a bye so our season starts on the 8th against last year's champions.
All our friendlies are complete.
I was player/manager against one of our 35s teams in a close 3-2 loss.
I was in goal (with an injured shoulder) in a 5-0 drubbing.
I was centre-back first half, sweeper in the second in a 2-1 win.
I missed our next one which finished 3-3.
I played in goal again (still injured) in another 3-3 draw. We were winning 3-2 with 5 minutes to go when they knocked a ball over the top which ran through to me. Still fresh from watching the Boston highlights I didn't pick it up and just strolled about the area with it. When their striker came towards me I dramatically dropped on it. Even the ref had a chuckle. Karma bit me on the arse when I dropped a free-kick in the final seconds. A couple of ricochets later and a defender scored an OG trying to clear it. The ref blew 1 second after the restart.
Question for Lennie: Should I have punched it rather than trying to catch it under pressure?
I'm booked in for a scan on my shoulder in a couple of weeks but hopefully my goalkeeping days are over. We've lost our sweeper to a coaching role elsewhere within the club and that is my favoured position.

"Question for Lennie: Should I have punched it rather than trying to catch it under pressure? "
Answer:- Catch the ball and punch the centre forward !
I'm only 5ft 10" so perhaps had to punch more than catch in my prime. Simple solution - play Walking Football with no overhead height and heading allowed.
Good luck for the new season, Downey.

All the best for the new campaign, hopefully lots of game time in the position you like to play. (And hope the scan can lead to the issue being helped)

Always good to live my sporting life vicariously through your exploits downy. Although the twinge in my shoulder isn’t comfortable! Good luck with the season and the scan.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to recover from a spasm in my back last Sunday so had to sit this one out.
After going down 2-0 early on we rallied in the second half to even the score only to concede straight away going on to lose 3-2.
I've had two trips to the doctor, a pelvic and abdomen CT scan and physio to make me feel almost "normal".
Hoping to train this week with no problems so I can possibly play next Sunday but I'm not forcing it.
Old age is a bitch.

Sounds like your lads gave it a good go, Downy.
It's good to know that you're on the mend, but you are right not to rush back. I know it's hard to watch from the sidelines, mate, but it's worth waiting that little bit longer just to make sure that you're fully recovered.
Fingers crossed you'll be back to fitness and champing at the bit sooner rather than later.
