Thanks mate.
Just to add, I'm aching more (mostly upper body) after the game in goals than I did in both games in defence.

Those aches and pains are testament to your clean sheet being a well-earned one, which is something our Lennie will testify to - be proud of 'em!

"Just to add, I'm aching more (mostly upper body) after the game in goals than I did in both games in defence." We keepers suffer for our cause. Great result, wins start from the back !

We keepers suffer for our cause. Great result, wins start from the back ! Agreed! Indeed, every good County side has had a good 'keeper - Ken Alan Baz Coops (Paul) Redders Neil Jonesy John Ruds Logan... I'll have missed some greats out there but the weight in Len's argument is there for all to see, in Conrad's case it's in more ways than one!

Some crap County teams have also relied on good keepers as well, Gaz. Some real drubbings would have been suffered on many occasions.

Time for an update of the last three games.
The 45s didn't have a game due to there being an odd number of teams in the league. I was asked to play in goal for the 35s third team.
We started the game well going into a 2-0 lead with not much to do at the back. Then a clumsy challenge led to a free-kick just outside the box. I pretended I knew what I was doing by putting 4 in the wall. Unfortunately my positioning was poor, as well as my handling and a pretty poor shot managed to squirm under me into the goal. Another free-kick from the opposite side was thankfully knocked straight into my hands. I think they thought I was the weak link at the back and hit every corner to me. My confidence was growing and I caught one corner, released it early, a through ball and one touch later and we were 3-1 up. Another corner just before half-time was headed downwards. The that headed it was almost already celebrating. I managed to dive backwards (Gordon Banks style) and scoop the ball away to keep the score at 3-1. A save as good as a goal.
Things went all our way in the second half with their through balls mostly overhit. We managed to score another 3 making the scoreline look a bit one-sided. I caught or flapped away most of their corners. One though was half cleared and a shot looked destined for the top corner. I managed to get 2 fingers and my thumb to it to tip it onto the corner of crossbar and post and out for another corner. At this point the ref came and spoke to me and said it made up for my mistake on the free-kick (cheeky bastard).
I got voted as man of the match and went home feeling quite smug.
90 minutes for the 45s at centre-back followed. I picked up a yellow card for a nasty push in the first half. We had the better chances but went in 0-0 at half-time.
A pretty even second half was decided by a penalty for handball which the keeper saved but the rebound went straight back to the taker and he made no mistake. 0-1.
After just 5 hours sleep in 2 nights I asked to go on the bench and ran the line for the first 45 minutes. We went 1-0 up but a deflected goal meant it was 1-1 at half-time.
I played the second half at centre-back. Another penalty for handball decided the game for the second week running although we were camped in their box for the last 10 minutes. I was right underneath one cross near the end and jumped to try and flick the ball goalwards. My eyes were on the ball all the way but I sensed someone beside me. We headed the ball (and each other) at exactly the same time. It was a brave defensive header but he came off worse with blood streaming down his face. I was relatively unscathed. Still no points though.
No game again for the 45s this week so I'll be in goal for the reserves against kids half my age. Update coming soon.

Goalie, centre-back AND linesman... great multi-tasking, Downy! Well done on your MoM award, too. And cheers for the report.

I really don't know where to start with that update, Downy - blimey!
Superb performances, mate, especially in that first game. It's not easy to pick yourself after a mistake, but you did that and then some to get the thoroughly deserved MOTM award!
It sounds like you played well in the other two games too, but I'm getting the impression that you're really enjoying your spells between the sticks - is this something you're going to do more often? You seem to have a talent for it, so do you think you'd like to play in goal permanently if asked to?
Anyway, that was an enjoyable read - well played, mate!

When I was managing the 35s and going in goal because there was no-one else wasn't that enjoyable. I used to dwell on every mistake and receive no feedback.
The Amateurs and Reserves take it a lot more serious, arriving early, proper warm up, back in the changing room for a team talk.
To be told by that manager that he rates me as a keeper and he'd love the opportunity that he's giving me has boosted my confidence. I speak to the amateur players in the pub on a Sunday after games and they all ask when I'm playing for them again. I'm trying to stay humble but some have said I'm better than their usual keeper (he misses games for work). I think I'm too old to start training twice a week and try to be their permanent keeper but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it!
Third time in goal for them, third time I've got a big Saturday night. See how Sunday goes...
