Back to 45s last weekend and a bit of bad planning. Our only 11am kick-off of the season and I'd agreed to a night out at the casino staying in a hotel on the Saturday.
That went very well so I only managed about 3 and a half hours sleep before an early breakfast and a 45 minute drive.
I arrived at the ground in quite a poor state. Just 3 subs for the first half and only 2 for the second.
No sweeper either so I agreed to do it in a back three. The first half was very even with a couple of half chances for both teams. I was playing alright apart from having a mouth drier than Gandhi's flip-flop. A mistake by one of our wing-backs trying to shield the ball out for a goal kick was punished with a goal with about 10 minutes remaining.
We started the second half the better team stringing together some decent passes and forcing them into errors. Our hard work was rewarded with an equaliser when a dangerous cross was headed into his own net by one of their central defenders.
It was short lived however when they were awarded a soft penalty which their player was definitely looking for but our other wing-back wasn't clever enough to pull out of the challenge.
The penalty hit the keeper's knees but just about made its way over the line. Another equaliser needed with about 20 minutes left.
We piled on the pressure, hitting the bar and forcing corner after corner. We had about 6 corners in the last 10 minutes with our other tall centre-back and myself getting forward. I stayed up after one had been half cleared. The ball came back in at the back post slightly too high and I thought I could head it down but it went just over the bar.
Our keeper came up for one corner but that hit the side netting and he had a long run back.
With our gung-ho attitude we eventually conceded another goal with the last kick of the match.
So a 3-1 defeat but plenty of positives. One of the most enjoyable games I've ever played in and the full 90 minutes for me with the hangover from hell.
The biggest compliment that they paid us was the fact that they brought on players from their first team when we were on top in the second half.
