GMWFL Over 65s - April session - Spring Season 2024 Division 1
Still a hard fought division with nothing between the teams apart from a little luck and a poor rub of the green
Blackpool 0 Bury 0 (even game with very few chances at either end)
Blackpool 0 Corinthians 1 (Undone by being too polite and honest. Two players went down and we stopped (unwritten WF Rule), their winger didn't and netted in the top corner. We were not happy).
Blackpool 0 Bolton 0 (great performance against a team we lost to last time out. We had the best chance of the match, well saved)
Blackpool 0 Wakefield 0 (another stalemate in a very open game. Pleased to make 3 crucial saves (one with my forehead), 2 in the last minute low down in the corner and both through a ruck of legs).
Wakefield (+8) 14 pts Bury (+7) 6pts Corinthians (+5) 10pts Bolton (+1) 7pts Blackpool (+3) 5pts
Only 1 goal in 8 games scored means we will struggle to survive this season. However 5 clean sheets out of 8 keeps my average up with the 65s at Heywood (59 out of 76 with 21 conceded).
Next up a trip to Gloucester to represent NW England WFA 65s regional side in the National Super Cup -1st session of 3). 5 players across the 2 squads absent due to holiday and injuries though.

Sterling effort as always Lennie. Great work! Unlike the s**thouse that went and scored when Blackpool had stopped playing to allow for his injured teammates. I hate that. The moral high ground is firmly under your feet and those of your teammates, Banksy.

Feels like they were a bit casual about the Corinthian spirit.

WFA 1st Round Over 60s Competition
Blackburn Rovers 0 Blackpool 1
Yet another tight game between the two friendly Lancashire rivals. This one was settled by a goal from (yes, you guessed) Nick Carter. The Seasiders survived a a late double scare when Blackburn first hit the post with a penalty and then had a second brilliantly saved by keeper Chris Turner in nets.
On they go into Round 2 in May.

WFA Regional Super League Session 1 Gloucester
2 squads from the NW (Greens and Blues) travel 3 and 1/2 hours to Gloucester to take part in the WFA Super League vs NW, Central, South West and South East (2 squads each) NW Greens 0 South East (North) 0 NW Greens 0 Central (Sky Blues) 0 NW Greens 0 South East (South) 0 NW Greens 0 North East (Blues) 2 NW Greens 0 South East (Blacks) 0
An odd day with goals few and far between as the nations elite stood toe to toe with each other. Over 3 sessions we will play each other twice (excluding your own other squad). Sadly we were well beaten by a powerful NE team (as at Burton last time) with their talisman forward being allowed two break away goals (disappointed to concede one of them).
The North West Blues also played 5 drew 4 and lost 1 and failed to score in all 5 matches. A long journey there and back in poor weather conditions and with 4 players injured or on holiday.
Good bunch of lads to play with and well organised. |We go again in June.
Next up WFA 65s cup game v Culceth (with 2 key players missing). I think I might be busy tonight.

Goals are always the problem at every level of football. Keeping them out is of course your forte and as always you want to do better. More power to your elbow!

WFA 1st Round Over 65s Competition
Blackpool 1 Culceth 1 (Culceth win 2-0 on pens)
A glum night at the AFC Fylde Sports Centre Complex.
A goal midway through the first half saw Culceth take the lead from a scuffed goal kick from yours truly, straight to their cultured midfielder who firmly planted the ball past me. Annoying, because of the new WFA disallowing keepers from rolling the ball out from deadball situations and secondly because I had just made a worldie, bottom corner, left hand, full length save, 2 minutes earlier, from the same guy (a NW WFA 65s compatriot who I had played with at Gloucester the day before).
An area encroachment gave us a second half equaliser from the spot but we were unable to hit the proverbial barndoor despite having the lion's share of possession and chances.
Straight to pens after 20 minutes each way. We managed to hit both the crossbar and their keeper with our first two, they of course stroked theirs away with style.
Not a happy bunny. A game we should have won, COMFORTABLY.
Hey ho, next up a rearguard action in the GMWFL 70s competition at Heywood next week, meanwhile a weekend off on grandchild sitting duties in Newcastle. Away the lads.
