Whatever happens from here on in, at least we've seen what happens when the 'keepball' part of the game is combined with some aggression, direct running and pace.

Of the three teams that qualified from our group, we're then only team that struggled against Scotland and failed to beat them.
Telling stat?

Commiserations to Wales, it started so well but it just didn't happen for them today. They came up against a Denmark team that has clearly been galvanised by what happened to Christian Eriksen, and I honestly think that anyone would have found it tough against them.
My gut feeling is that we'll be joining them for the Summer break on Tuesday.

wales were a bit lucky to get to half time only a goal down, but conceding -and unfortunately gifting the goal- early in the second half was a bit of a killer.
we've been hearing about how great the officiating has been so far, but there have been some outliers, including today's failure to award a free kick for the clear foul in the build up to the above goal, and one of the more ridiculous straight red cards i've ever seen. for instance, when andre marriner misidentified the culprit and sent kieran gibbs off, at least a red card offence had been committed, if not by gibbs, whereas today's was a clear booking, but never has been and never will be a sending off. what was it? violent conduct? serious foul play?...neither. the replays make it look even more ridiculous.
ultimately, wales got out of their group and fair play for that. unrealistic to think they might make the semis again with the players available. what they need to do is keep up being a regular tournament qualifier before anything else.

Yup, yesterday's game contained very poor/disruptive officiating examples and, to make matters worse, VAR seemed to take an age.
My 'favourite' was when the ball was played behind the Austrian defence to an Italian player who was very clearly several yards offside. The lino kept his flag down, meaning Austria had to work hard to defend for another minute. But as soon as Austria won it and looked to break, the flag went up!
While I know they are instructed to leave the flag down until the goal chance has gone, it is ridiculous for this to be implemented when it's not even remotely close to being onside. Maybe that will change in time.

Kane's last 5 or so minutes where he's dropped to build play has been better. Be stood there most of the match in hope if neither wing back show any personality to run it and the midfield 2 can't break a line with a pass or a run.
Overall, too many look a little hesitant to do something. Maguire stepping out (and getting fouled) at least spotted when it was on to run it but the reaction of others around him (literally watching it instead of creating an aggressive option) was poor.
Germans seem to be able to have time on the ball in front of our defence, which needs fixing, as does what the hell we're doing on the press.

Great first goal, Sterling showing great attitude to drive at their heart and link with Kane. Shaw high, Sterling joining Kane in front of the goal and skitted home well.
After really bad game management in which Germany went through on a long ball straight after our goal, and then MotM Sterling gifting Muller a huge chance, Shaw stepped up on the press nicking it and Grealish had the quality to find Kane. Game over.
Better personality as the game went on and a combination of missing and Pickford saves see us happy and still in with wvery chance of further progression.
And breathe/drink.

Better after Grealish came on, but Muller should have made the game level - we got away with it there.

Congrats to England from the Welsh quarter! Very decent, and entertaining, second-half performance today.

Cheers for that, Maccy!
We're far from favourites, but we're now down to the last 8, so you never know!
