I don't believe Henderson would be a bad choice for captain, given the lack of other options.

I don't believe Henderson would be a bad choice for captain, given the lack of other options. It's not exactly Hobson's choice, gts - there are plenty of others he could give it to who will be just as adept at guiding the squad back to Stansted within the first two weeks!

Henderson is awful, he doesn't bring anything to any team he plays for!! It's unbelievable to think if Liverpool somehow manage to win the Champions League he'll be lifting the trophy!! I can't think of a poorer captain for Liverpool in their history!!!

The man wearing the arm-band should be the one who commands most respect from the referee. This is why so many countries nominate the player with the most caps as they've usually had previous experience of the top referees and are able to communicate with them.
In terms of motivation of the other players, you want as many of those as possible and wearing an arm-band has no bearing on ability to perform that role.
I think that the starting eleven that Southgate is planning is: Pickford Trippier/Walker/Stones/Maguire/Young Dier/Henderson Sterling/Kane/Lingard
The captain will, therefore, be one of Henderson, Dier and Kane. My preference would be Kane.

The only basis for Kane being named captain is that he is our best player. Aside from that he has zero captaincy experience, and the childish way he behaved over claiming Eriksen's disputed goal the other week by "swearing on his daughter's life" isn't particularly mature or befitting for the captain of a national team. Not that it will be of any importance once we get dumped out of the group stage by Panama...

A friendly against France and WC qualifiers against Scotland, Lithuania and Slovenia are hardly anything to write home about.

By that token, Henderson has also captained England in the past, 5 times in fact, in some equally thrilling contests. Friendlies against Netherlands and Spain, and WC qualifiers against Malta, Slovakia and Slovenia.

I didn't say it was - you said he had zero captaincy experience. I wasn't arguing his case, I was pointing out a fact that he's had the armband on in the past - so what "token" are you referring to in my post?

I feel I need to point out at this point that I couldn't care less who the Captain is, because the quality of the available candidates ranges from bad to worse.
I won't be taking any days off to watch any games that are on during my shift pattern, nor will I be attempting to watch them on my phone while in work - I've been let down by the England team one time too many, with Euro 2016 being the final straw.

i think that's good logic archie. none of them are anywhere near robsons or butchers, but they've all played in big games at the right end of competitions, and been around that level for a few seasons. there's not huge experience in a lot of the squad, and i just don't see an older head like cahill being the right fit.
that said, they've all had a bit of a charisma bypass, especially dier. henderson often reverts to dull platitudes and kane's face reminds me of a spoon. i'd quite like someone who could get us to see out matches on willpower alone, who gets the belief from his teammates. sadly, i don't think there's anything like that near the england squad.

For comparison, the French squad has been announced, and the following players haven't made the cut and are on the 'standby' list!
- W. Ben Yedder - K. Coman - B. Costil - M. Debuchy - L. Digne - A. Lacazette - A. Martial - A. Rabiot - M. Sakho - M. Sissoko - K. Zouma
