Looks a bit heavy on full backs and a bit light on creative midfielders. I also would've taken an old fashioned target man for emergencies, as I don't think we have many variations up front. Either way, a good number of young players.
I just hope we adopt a positive playing style and give the players some freedom. A couple of nice goals and a bit of drama will be a good achievement, and represent a pleasing shift away from our whimperingly feeble displays at recent tournaments.

I think we will go with 3 at the back, playing with 2 wing backs. It would explain the amount of full back options selected. I can see Kyle Walker playing as a 3rd CB with Trippier or TAA outside him. The delivery from wide positions for Kane and the overlap from the full backs outside of Sterling/Rashford/Lingard will be our main creative outlets I would think.
We are rather bereft of creativity from CM if we go with Henderson and Dier. In which case, their job is to just be solid, break the game up and recycle the ball.

The least experienced squad since 1962 apparently.
2022 in Qatar could be interesting...

You're probably right, gts. Southgate has played that system in the last few friendlies. All fair enough, I just think you need options on the bench to change your system in tournaments. Fresh legs are great, but if the tactics aren't working, you need Plan B. County's game against Chorley is a good example!

No point in having a target man who isn't good enough to get a regular club start particularly when at least one of the options (Crouch) was used in an official video for referees that demonstrated the sort of challenge that should be penalised.
Very surprised that Bertrand hasn't made it but, by and large, those who missed out were third choice anyway. I still think that, had Hart played behind the Burnley defence and Pope behind West Ham's, things would have looked very different.

I'd be surprised if we go very far this WC. How many psychologists are we taking?
I fully expect to fall asleep during any of the matches I can be bothered to watch... sorry......

The son of a lad I work with is currently at Everton and is now part of the England U15s squad, and they've been experimenting with 3 at the back in friendlies. Indeed, his son had been earmarked by the coaching staff for being able to play right back and also as a centre half as part of a three. So that makes sense to me.

Walker in a 3 at the back is a great idea.

Who do you think will be captain?

I wonder if the idea of a captain is changing - especially at tournaments. Traditionally, it has had a status largely driven by the players and their childhood dream of being England Captain.
Looking at the squad, I don't think there is a single player who you would say is certain to play every game. That makes a captain a bit redundant. Everyone does media duties, anyone can call Heads or Tails, the players do what they like on the pitch - regardless of who is captain.
It's different in rugby and cricket, but for international football, pick the starting 11 for the game and then pick a captain - largely because FIFA will demand someone has the armband on. As the selection changes (according to tactics, opposition, injury, form), then change the captain. A manager tailors everything for each game, so why not the captain?

Agree with all of that, Eppers - although I am guessing that some name or other will need to be thrown out here, if only to cover pre-tournament media duties and give the impression that England will be heading east with a nominated leader on the pitch!
My money would be on Henderson.

I think he'll give it to Harry Kane myself.
