It arrived today! Note the 'CHS TT7' catalogue number, which was eventually used on 'The Special A.K.A live' E.P. by The Specials Also note that this single was never issued with the 2-Tone records 'Walt Jabsco' sleeve, it just came in a plain white sleeve. Note the 'CHS-TT-7' catalogue number etched in the runout Also note the etched crossed out 'XX-1' catalogue number in the runout, which is the one that was eventually used on the official F-Beat release. For some reason it also has 'CHS-TT8' etched and crossed out in the runout - this catalogue number ended up being used on The Selecter single 'Three Minute Hero'. Here you can see my original copy of the Special A.K.A Live E.P. which was subsequently designated the 'CHS TT7' catalogue number Action photo. And finally, this is probably the most comprehensive explanation of how this piece of history came to be that I can find. "Following the collapse of Radar (the label Costello recorded for up until this point) and fresh from producing The Specials’ first album, his manager Jake Riviera approached 2 Tone with the idea of releasing the track as a one-off single until a label was found and a deal was struck to release the Get Happy LP. WEA, owners of Radar, were not impressed. Given that they had been distributing his records, they felt that they had a stake in Costello’s success and promptly served a writ on 2 Tone, stopping them releasing the record. The few thousand 7”s that had been pressed were given away at a Rainbow Theatre gig in London, and Riviera sneakily pressed up some more which were given away at other London and American gigs. Interviewed in Record Collector No 363, Jerry Dammers takes a slightly different view point : “Jake Riviera cheekily printed up a few thousand Elvis Costello singles on the 2 Tone label, obviously thinking that I would be delighted to have such a major star on the label, but I was having none of it, 2 Tone being strictly ska at that time. So Elvis was forced to give these singles away free at his gigs.” These 2 Tone singles are now ridiculously collectible. If you have one it’s worth checking out what the 2 Tone nuts’ll pay for it."The above was taken from the following article: Article Link
Apologies for the complete nerdiness of this post, but as a 2-Tone 'nut' it's a piece of history that I find absolutely fascinating.

Brilliant posts - words, pictures, the lot - Gazz.
El produced the debut 'Specials' album, too, I remember. And wasn't 'Gangsters' the only other 2 Tone single not to be issued in a Walt Jabsco sleeve?

And wasn't 'Gangsters' the only other 2 Tone single not to be issued in a Walt Jabsco sleeve? That's correct, mate. Indeed, the sleeves with the initial issues were actually hand-stamped by the band themselves. It's said that many of the originals haven't worn well over time, and it's a real unicorn of an item to get hold of. There are fakes out there too, unfortunately, which has totally put me off bidding for one if I ever see one available.

This is crazy. Someone's done an AI remix of 'that' MTV unplugged gig Liam didn't turn up for, where Noel ended up singing the entire set.
It's changed Noel's voice to sound like Liam. It works, but if you've heard/watched that gig as many times as I have it's freaky as f***.
That AI is dangerous stuff...

I never thought I'd ever get the chance to own one of these, but..... Action photo... From Discogs: Matrix / Runout (A-Side Runout, etched): TT+1-3 OR GANGSTERS
This is the initial Rough Trade distributed issue. These issues came with a plain white sleeve stamped by the band themselves with the words THE SPECIAL A.K.A 'Gangsters' Vs THE SELECTER. This stamped sleeve was limited to 5000 copies. The subsequent issues came in the standard 2-Tone sleeve: Gangsters / The Selecter
On this pressing, Gangsters fades out towards the end. The solid centre has a less pronounced, single dip; later pressings have double dips. I'll say no more, I'm still gobsmacked!

Touch of Holy Grail there, Gazz-man! What a fantastic find. I know, mate, I couldn't believe my luck. The seller simply needed the funds for 'other things', and is selling some of her rarities. She's a member of the 2-Tone.info 2-Tone group on Google and my copy was verified as genuine by a friend of hers who also happens to be one of the website's experts. He's written some really good articles on there, not least this one relating to the Costello withdrawn single: 2-tone.info/display/?683 She's also told me that it's not known for sure which pressing of the Costello 2-Tone single is actually the first one, so I'm more than happy with that - for now! There are many other collectibles out there, but this is the one I really wanted and I'm now more than happy to quit looking for the rarities and go back to buying the 'normal' vinyl.

Is anyone doing Record Store Day tomorrow?
Having heard stories of people camping outside the shops from midnight last year, I'm swerving it myself and trying my luck on Discogs and eBay later in the day.
I went down around lunchtime for RSD23 for the Suggs & Weller 7" picture disc, only to be told they'd only had a small amount of copies and they went almost as soon as the store was open that morning.
I fear I may miss out on the ones I want this year, but let's see.

Not for me, gazz. Can't be doing with the hype and the faff. I'm happy to support record shops all year and don't really like how RSD is more about non-vinyl collectors buying records to make a profit on ebay.

Picked this up on holiday. Very pleased as it is the red vinyl and signed by the band.

That is very cool, Eps!
I agree with you on RSD, they should rename it 'Scalper's Day'. I think it's a con and don't think there's any real volume of new releases in any of the stores at all, I think they use this to get people into the store to buy their existing stock when they get in there.
I think they deliberately hold a lot of the new stuff back for the carnage on Monday evening when they go on sale online, causing a panic over the weekend to ensure they sell everything they've got online - that is where the scalpers cash in.

I've just checked eBay now and the releases I've had my eye on are all there to buy as "pre-release", most with 100% mark-up when you include the shipping costs.
They're clearly all in the loop these online sellers, with usernames that suggest that they're either proper online businesses, work for record stores taking part, or work at the warehouses that have held the stock for RSD.
I've seen it happen when limited edition trainers go on sale, within minutes the most popular sizes (including mine) are all gone and you will see sellers online with every size imaginable available to buy for an increased price - It's a disgrace.
Human nature, the strive to always be first, to be able to make a killing off the next guy, it makes me sick.
