As I said, I see no reason to doubt county fan's word.
Regarding political correctness, it may have some grey areas and the lines can often be blurred, but one thing I don't like being referred to as is a 'white British Male', but some see that as the easiest way to describe my ethnicity. I always label myself as an Englishman, simple as that. I see the use of skin colour to describe a person as unnecessary, not to mention unimportant. However, I don't kick up a stink about it because what would that achieve, aside from giving us all more egg shells to walk over?
The fact of the matter is that some people complain because they can, and sometimes their only motivation for doing so is to add more weight to their cause, and I am including people of my own nationality in that. We're supposed to be a multi-cultural society, but unfortunately the ugly face of racism and intolerance is still out there, and it's only exclusive to one particular race, the Human race.

Good summary, gazza. All personal preference but my passport describes me as a 'British Citizen' and that's what I quote when asked nationality. Likewise, country of residence is the UK. On the Oldham controversy, I'm pretty much with jlc on this in that it's impossible to prove that something never happened but, much as I dislike the Mail, I think it's unlikely that they're involved. It's more likely that this is an urban myth promoted by social media. If you google 'Oldham St Georges flag ban' the only remotely relevant article to appear is this: www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk/news-features/8/news/41421/carry-on-flying-the-flag-for-world-cup-dream

Just to clarify: I never actually said this appeared in the Mail. I just said it sounded like the kind of b*llsh*t they print.

Ah, the good old Daily Mail: 'we never knowingly let the facts get in the way of a story'

Except in this case, where they haven't actually printed a story.

Except in this case, where they haven't actually printed a story. I'm pretty sure Eps was simply adding his opinion of the Daily Mail in general, Downy. In any case, they don't have to print anything in any of their editions, it's all good toilet paper, but I can see the ink causing a few problems for some!

I'll hear nothing bad said about the Daily Mail! It provided some of the best hamster cage lining I've ever had!

In any case, they don't have to print anything in any of their editions, it's all good toilet paper, but I can see the ink causing a few problems for some! Yep, just a general comment on the DM - and newspapers in general, for that matter. Since 24 on line papers poor sub editors are under pressure to put new stories on the websites to keep the public clicking into articles and generating advertising revenue. The problem is that you can go quite a bit longer than 10 minutes with nothing happening. So they have to make boring non-stories sound exciting (code for: make stuff up). In this context the political bias of the newspaper will be emphasised even more than usual as it involves giving everything a slant. The Daily Mail is aimed at the 'Outraged of Tunbridge Wells' Tory/UKIP voter so it will emphasise (sensationalise?) stories to feed that audience (to generate more clicks and ad revenues). In Blighty the printed press is right wing dominated and the radio/TV media is left/liberal dominated so you have to take everything with a big pinch of salt. But salt is bad for you (according to the newspapers, radio news and TV news) so it's probably best to avoid the whole lot. It also causes mild discord between CH members, which is another reason to bin the lot. The 'Irrational Dislikes' and 'Bar Jokes' threads are much more fun, so I'm off there. Later.

CountyFan. A Pakistani Lord Mayor-or any Pakistani for that matter-would perhaps have signs in Urdu as well as English as the former is spoken by most of them, but not Arabic, which is not their language.

I think we need to draw a line under this thread before anyone oversteps the mark and makes a comment that can't be retracted or defended. Not against honest debate but just putting a little sensitivity into the topic. Hope no one objects.
