Last weekend saw the pushy Palenos travel most of the way to Madrid to take on the mighty manchego (no cheesy jokes here please!) In a hard fought game apparently played with good quality across the pitch manchego scored twice. Fortunately both were disallowed and so having failed to trouble the scorers for another week we shared the points 0-0. This allowed the boys in blue to move out to the drop zone and we currently sit three points off the playoff positions. This Sunday sees us home to another Malagueñan side in Estepona, home victory would move us level on points with our opponents.

As usual when there is a delay in posting about a game there has been an issue… For this match I invited my friends from the exercise group that I am part of, we eat and drink as much as we exercise! Fortunately the bar has now reopened so we were able to enjoy some aspects of the day.
On the pitch things went as always, a strong Estepona side who were preseason favourites matched up well against ourselves. The first half involved some attempts at passing movement but both midfields stifled much of the progress. They had a couple of good chances which stemmed from us overplaying it at the back and creating problems. In the end half time arrived as always with the score at 0-0. My friends had been enjoying the noise generated by El Palo Ultras, with the constant drumming and singing. What they didn’t realise was that they were actually singing a homophobic song. Rhyming Estepona with the Spanish word for gay… Into the second half and we started brightly again. After ten minutes they played a ball down the right wing. Their player was at least a yard offside right in front of linesman. Nothing given. Ball was squared into the box and knocked into his own net by Lulu. Needless to say anger from all around and the Ultras got louder and more aggressive. Eight minutes later Roberto Sierra chasing back to cover made a reckless challenge and received his second yellow. What had been an already difficult task was now nigh on impossible. They played well and exploited the numerical advantage. We all agreed that they are the best team we have seen at our ground this season. With twenty minutes to go they scored a header from a corner and the long grey haired defender, who has been a target for our idiots, was the scorer. After this the unpleasant chanting and aggression grew more. However there were no more goals. As we were collecting the flag at the end of the match, we heard an all too familiar roar, football fans sensing a fight. For those familiar with the early matches at Solihull when the players had to pass through the crowd, it is similar at El Palo except it is only the away team that cross. The Ultras charged towards the Estepona team in a shameful way. Fortunately no blows were actually thrown.

Sorry to read about the defeat, Duds, plus the unfortunate chanting and 'mither' at the end.
The boys need to just put this one behind them and look to putting it right in the next game, but hopefully without the idiotic songs and behaviour.
Cheers as always, Duds.

Just goes to show, very sadly, that every club has its lunatic fringe... ☹

So November finished in the way that it had continued throughout. A way to Cadiz B the team struggled on a large grass pitch and we had two El Palo inglés there (the only away fans!). By the end we were going down with cramp. It was like the old Wembley finals. We went behind before equalising with a rebound from a penalty save. They went on to score two more goals but it could have been six or seven. After an excellent October, November saw us lose three and draw scoring only one goal in the process. Will December see us do any better? Returning to the issue with the Ultras, one of our dilemmas was that they were created seven months ago by the club’s sporting director so how would any complaint to them be received by the club? Regardless of this we felt strongly enough that I sent a collective email to the club. Below is their reply…
Good afternoon, friends. First of all, on behalf of the management of El Palo FC, we want to thank you for the great work you do for the team, always faithful to every match we play, whether at home or away from the neighborhood, always with an impeccable attitude worthy of admiration. .
We deeply regret the events that occurred last Sunday in the match against CD Estepona. As you indicate in the statement, there is no room for violent and aggressive animation, which is unfortunately what we witnessed. From the entity we do not tolerate nor of course we support the obscene gestures and shouts that occurred in a sector of the stands, and we are already taking the relevant measures to sanction what happened and prevent it from happening again. Once again, we regret and feel sorry for the image that could have been exposed, which evidently does not represent us.
In short, thank you very much for directing your feelings towards the direction of the club, which will be taken as a basis to improve and progress as an entity. You are a true example of how an entertainment group should act and of the purest Paleno feeling. Thank you so much, El Palo Inglés.
Signed Address El Palo FC

That's a good response from the club, Duds, so hopefully this will now see an improvement in the Ultras' behaviour. It's been a disappointing November results-wise, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for an upturn this month.
Cheers for the update, mate.

Sunday saw us facing the team from next to Gibraltar. Liñense Balompedia. The Ultras were in a new home close to the old Frente Paleño (the original old guys flag waving and drumming) They made good noise, but behaved well, so one bonus from the game. It was an even first 20 minutes both sides had opportunities although clearly for us none were clearcut. Our winger Raul Rojas lost his man, defensively, then the winger picked up the ball and crossed into the box… bam! In goes the first goal. We continued to play good football without ever actually forcing a save or looking like we were going to score the goal. On the stroke of half time, Josema, in the middle of defence in place of our normal centre back, César Llopis, decided that would be the perfect time to dribble the ball out, despite being surrounded by two attackers. As you can imagine, the ball was dispatched into the back of the net with the final kick of half. Half time trailing 0-2. In the second half, we played well created opportunities never really looked like getting back into the game. We desperately need a striker. Hopefully come January, when the transfer window opens, we can get somebody in because without goals we are going down. Final score two goals to nil, I shall attach a link to the highlights. The second goal gets worse every time I see it! Whoever decided playing out from the back was a good idea. Hoof the ball! At least we can take comfort from the fact that we are now playing slightly better and that we are only four points from safety. ¡Vamos Palo!

That's painful to watch, Duds.
I'm sure the boys will turn the corner as long as they keep giving their best. A striker would definitely help, though, as you say.

The last home game of the year, saw us home to San Roque De Lepe a team from Huelva in Andalucía and just a 3 1/2 hour drive away. It was one of those rare games when we actually looked the better team, we challenged them high for the ball played around. We didn’t quite look like Brazil but it was a good performance.
Obviously being El Palo, we didn’t actually manage to score a goal, indeed, as always halftime arrived, and the game was goalless. the hero, Awana was making his home debut for the season having had knee surgery earlier this autumn, and he was, as ever, a formidable force at the back, although you could tell it was his first game of the season, and he did make some mistakes. He returned to the team as a substitute last week, came on to replace the injured Lulu and gave away the penalty that lead to the only goal of the game… Anyway, onto to more positive things we actually moved the ball well again in the second half and super skipper Javi Lopez slotted home from around 10 yards out! We were in the lead and in truth never looked like losing it. We went close a couple of times and Breñe had one disallowed just before the end. All in all a positive way to end the year, with one game left to complete the first half of the season, away to league leaders Sevilla B is our first game of the new year. Currently we sit just three points off the survival position so there is still all to play for! Vamos El Palo.
