But what of the mighty El Palo? Well, we are quite simply a different team. Last season we were coached by the former assistant who stepped up when the manager left with two months of the previous season to go. We achieved a playoff spot then but only due to the reorganisation of the leagues, during the course of last season it was difficult to identify any real style of play. Rusk style keep the ball and pass it around whilst doing nothing of value seemed to be the limit of our ambitions. The death of the club president and his subsequent replacement by a younger local businessman(He has developed Besoccer which is a Spanish football stats analysis system) has led to a revamping of many aspects of the club. We have a new coach, he comes from a divisional rival Huétor Tajar, citing the ambition of the club as a reason for his arrival. We have signed in total 18 (eighteen) new players for a combined fee of zero and retained six of the squad from last season.

Our preseason has been interesting, with three games against teams in the step above drew two and lost one and also three against teams at our level two draws and a win. Only one game was at home, but what a game… Last year my season ticket cost 80 € and I felt that was a good price for 16 games of football with pay on the gate of 10 € it was half price. During the season I began to gather more affiliates to the El Palo English section. So much so that there were five provisional season ticket for the forthcoming season. But what would happen with a new president and a much more ambitious club? You know the reality… 50 € for a season ticket!!! And if you pay 60 € you can have a first team kit. Not a replica, the same kit the team wear! And I may have also expanded the El Palo Inglés to six members!!! And yes of course I took the 60 € option. I am now the proud wearer of a sexy black El Palo away kit! As part of their #serelpalo (to be El Palo) initiative they are hoping to attract 500 ‘marineros’ including in their plans if you buy the season ticket (abono) in a local shop the shop will get 10€ of the price! Last season’s average gate was around 200 a couple of weeks ago they announced they already had 250+ season tickets sold. So it should be a rowdy old time this season. Fortunately I’ve moved house this summer and my new place is literally across the street so I can be there in less than 20 seconds from the front door to my apartment block! Sadly no pitch view.

Why did I get distracted about that game… ah yes free entry for season ticket holders as we played Málaga B in what is an annual trophy match in honour of the founder of El Palo FC. Málaga B are the ‘estudiantes’ or youth team of Málaga CF. Well those kids sure got a lesson that day, we absolutely walloped them 5-0 two goals coming as a result of first time crosses, one from each side of the pitch. The new coach plays some very fluid formations and whilst some of the link up play a little dodgy (not surprising given how many new players are being integrated) there was some real quality movement and pressure. Reading one of the reports from another preseason friendly game, it stated that we began the game with a 2-6-2 formation! Roll on the excitement of Saturday…

Definition of a true fan, moving next door to the stadium. Sounds like really good prices and incentives to get a ST. Good luck this coming season and look forward to your reports and photos.

Match day 1 Huracán Melilla (H) And so with more than 300 hundred season ticket holders secured the campaign began on Saturday. Which resulted in a slightly reduced crowd because our usual kick off is Sunday evening, but in order to accommodate the travel arrangements of our opponents to and from Africa Saturday lunchtime it was. The crowd was also augmented by the presence of Dudley junior and his friend who were over for the weekend. From the way the game began you would have thought that some of their team still thought it was a Sunday evening game. Within 10 minutes the mighty Paleños were two goals to the good. The first involved some nice movement of the ball across the edge of the area, the second relied on their defence still being in Melilla as a long ball over the top was ignored and our striker was able to bring it forward and place it past the keeper with no pressure at all! The half continued with almost constant El Palo pressure but no more goals and I am unable to recall an attack of note from the opposition. And yes drinking beer whilst watching football are still the regular activities… Second half was much in the vein of the first (both had drinks breaks) as the heat of the sun began to take its toll on the players. It was pretty damn hot drinking beer in the shade in the stands! Whilst there were a couple of breaks and one corner for the hurricane the most action out keeper had was one punch out (very Spanish!). We continued to make opportunities and around 70 minutes in a free kick from the left was nodded in by Ibra, although the lino initially gave it as offside before the ref overruled him! As time was ticking by a nice ball was played down the right channel and when squared across the box it felt like half the team dummied it before it was tucked away to make it a very satisfying start to the season. New team still clearly getting to know each other with some great runs not seen and other passes not anticipated, the games can only get tougher. Seriously they cannot all be that easy!

Another feature of the new regime is their social media awareness. Including goals online!! Please note the black shirted gentleman celebrating the third and fourth goals, very sexy looking fella I’d say…

Please note the black shirted gentleman celebrating the third and fourth goals, very sexy looking fella I’d say… Excellent stuff, mate with the second goal being the pick for me. Nice control with his head and an excellent finish. Is that you bottom right clapping the second and third goals next to the guy in the striped shirt (who I assume is DJ Duds jnr) Duds?

This weekend’s action sees us take on Huetor Tajar (Hector’s tractor). A top of the table clash as both teams hit four last weekend. Our clean sheet giving us a slight advantage at the top of the table! We have been competing at the same level for nine seasons now and having had the best of it in the early years. We have struggled to beat them recently. Three home draws and three away defeats in the previous three seasons. All the defeats by one goal apart from last season’s two nil defeat. Let battle commence!
