Morning everyone.
Fancy a game of poker?
Don't worry if you've never played before, I've simplified the rules somewhat for the CH version by eliminating the betting element (can't be seen to be gambling now can we?!)
Here's how it'll work (assuming there are enough players - we'll need at least 6 or so):
Once we have our 'table', I'll allocate you a place at the table at random. I'll then send you each a PM with the two cards you have been dealt (I've discovered a nifty 'random card generator' online).
I'll be the dealer, and the person to my left will go first. Once they have considered their two cards, and the strength of their hand, they can choose to either 'fold' or 'check' and post their decision on the thread for the other players to see. Then the person to their left goes next and so on until everyone has decided. If everyone folds before the final player, that final player goes through to the next round. If there are at least two players still in the hand, I'll then reveal the 'flop' which is a series of three cards from which the players can now make their hand by adding in the two cards they have. Again, the first player to my left who is still in the hand can choose to fold or check and so on.
If we still have at least two players in having gone around the table again, we go to a 4th drawn card known as 'the turn'. We then have another round of folding or checking.
Lastly, again assuming we have at least two players remaining, a 5th and final card is revealed known as the 'river'.
There are now 5 cards on the table, plus the two in each players hand (which no one else knows). If, having revealed all 5 cards on the table we still have more than one player in the game, there will be a showdown and only the strongest hand will proceed with all other players in that final showdown eliminated.
I'll help anyone who needs it as we go along, but the following is the order of cards from strongest hand to weakest:
1. Royal Flush - This is the best hand that can be obtained in poker and is the 10, J, Q, K, A of the same suit.
2. Straight Flush - A sequence of the same suit, e.g. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 of clubs.
3. Four of a Kind - self-explanatory really!
4. Full House - 3 of a kind and a pair, e.g. Q, Q, Q, 6, 6
5. Flush - Any 5 cards of the same suit
6. Straight - Any 5 sequential cards (e.g. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) of different suits
7. Three of a Kind
8. Two Pairs
9. One Pair
10. High Card - where you have none of the above hands.
Remember, your hand is made up of any of the 5 cards on display. So, by the time of the 'river' you have 7 cards from which to make your hand.
Don't worry, I'll be on hand as the dealer to help anyone who isn't sure about their hand as we go along.
All everyone needs to do is respond to this thread by midday tomorrow if they would like to play!
(I hope we get at least a few as Gazza has gone to a great deal of trouble creating playing card smileys for me to do this!)
Any questions, send me a PM!
Sandy
