Word from the Supporters Cooperative....
It was a busy weekend for board members of the Supporters Cooperative who ,along with watching County demolish Altrincham , busied themselves on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday saw County supporters respond magnificently to our appeals in support of the Wellsprings `Rucksack Project'. A number of rucksacks with various clothing items inside were donated and a really massive amount of clothing and food( picture here)also.
Later the same day we staged our annual `Christmas Cavort' at the Spinning Top.
Whilst the turnout for this event was not huge , it was however an enjoyable night with a decent band providing entertainment later in the evening.
£63 was raised via the raffle- boosting the Guardian Account .
Sunday saw the Cooperative board in the cabin again from 2.30 ahead of the Stockport County Carol Service , completing the collection of donations to the Wellspring `Rucksack Project'. Amongst the donated items were a couple of bags from James Gannon who popped along to the cabin to drop them off and show support.
The collection was a great success as was the Carol Concert which was very well organised and included an opening speech from James Gannon.....a presentation about the Wellspring from Jonathan Billings ......and a few words from County Chaplain, Billy Montgomery.
Tim Wightman, Rob Walters and Stockport Family Church arranged this excellent event, which did the Club, the Co-operative and our town proud.
Over 300 people were in attendance and over £500 was collected for the Wellspring, to which the Cooperative added £55 along with the items donated to the Wellspring by County supporters.
Mince pies were provided from the Co-op, which seemed to go down well!
The hope is that this event can be held annually and will grow and grow.
In conclusion, we wish our members and all County Supporters a very happy Xmas and a promotion packed new year! Stockport County Supporters Cooperative.

New Years Day and Beyond.....
It is just 2 months since the Supporters Cooperative staged their , at that stage, annual Quiz Night at the splendid Spinning Top bar next to the Garrick Theatre on the A6.
Thanks to the great response from County supporters , and the wit and wisdom of Quiz Master Nick Lee, the evening, blessed with some cracking food laid on by Mike Swann the Spinning Top landlord, was a massive success lifting the Guardian Account above £30000.
The ` at that stage' bit earlier in this piece refers to the fact that the Cooperative have taken the decision to stage Quiz events on a more regular basis, particularly as Nick Lee's light touch at the mike, and with the questions, goes down so well.
So....we know that many fans live out of town and find getting to our events difficult. Hence the decision to stage the next Quiz Night at the New Mills FC Social Club, to acknowledge our far flung fan base. The date chosen is Saturday 21 January 2017, so please put a team together, and support this event by contacting johngiles20@hotmail.com
The Quiz Master is again Nick Lee......Cost to enter is £3 per person/ £15 per team .......prizes to winners ..........and a grand raffle ! So act quickly please and be sure the details are in your diary!
Before that though.......
This Sunday before the return game with Harrogate Town the Supporters Cooperative will be in the Cabin in the Cheadle End Car Park, from 1.30 until 2.30. We have a range of shirts on sale ( proceeds to the Guardian Account) priced at a neat £10 each and tee shirts at £5 tops.
So we will be pleased to see you....sell you something...or take any donated memorabilia items ( shirts/ hats/ scarves etc) for re-sale as above.
After the game the Spinning Top is again opening its doors to County supporters who are beginning to feel right at home in the popular bar. Landlord Mike Swann is again donating 10% of takings twixt 5 and 8 pm , to the Guardian Account.
So why not pop in and sample some real hospitality and some fine real ales.
Later at the Spinning Top there is excellent live music on if , as many County fans do, you choose to stay on .
On Sunday its– PHIL ROBBIE’S INDIE SUNDAY in association with County Supporters Co-op, but before that ...tonight ...
FRIDAY 30th 9pm BRIDGEWATER BLUES BAND
Four piece Blues/rhythm and blues band. Established since 2008 and played Colne Blues festival four years running, Maryport Blues Festival, Congleton Blues Fest twice, Hebden Bridge, Diggle and Clun Blues festivals as well as prestigious Bjs Blues Club in Chorley 5 years running, Matt and Phreds blues club in Manchester and JBs blues club in Oldham. Line up is:- Dave Eatock (Vocals/Blues Harp), Jon Ingham (Lead/Rhythm and Slide guitars), Chris Millward (Bass), Andy Hart (Drums).

Marcus Heap recently tracked down the last two players from the 66/67 Championship season, for the reunion later in the season. Keith Allen and Keith East are looking forward to coming up for the reunion. Marcus asked K Allen if he would bring his medal. Keith started crying and explained how he never received one. Keith left halfway through the season having clocked up 23 league games. The Football League will reproduce an exact gold replica but will cost £700. It would be a complete and lovely surprise for him on the day, if we could get such a faithful replica made and presented to him. To this end we have set up a Just Giving account to raise the necessary funds to see this done. You can reach this a/c and donate via this link.... www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ian-brown-2Please consider supporting this effort- however small the donation it will be put to good use and be very much appreciated. Thank you.

News from the Supporters Cooperative. Wellspring Drop. Following the magnificent effort pre-Xmas by County supporters we have previously delivered a large amount of donated items to the Wellspring, all of which were gratefully received. Sunday saw Dave Marchbank call at the Stockport homeless charity again to drop off some late donations ( we will always receive and deliver items for Wellspring whatever time of year ) of clothing and related materials ( towels etc) , and it was the first opportunity to hand over a cheque for the £55 in cash donated prior to Xmas via the cabin. Medal for Keith Allen. We are urging support for this appeal. Marcus Heap recently tracked down the last two players from the 66/67 Championship season, for the reunion later in the season. Keith Allen and Keith East are looking forward to coming up for the reunion. Marcus asked Keith Allen if he would bring his medal. Keith started crying and explained how he never received one. Thank you. County Quiz on Tour. We are 11 days away from this venture aimed by the Supporters Cooperative. The event starts around 6pm on Saturday 21 January at the New Mills Football Club, with prizes and raffle etc to supplement the well pitched, none eye wateringly difficult, questions devised by Quiz Master Nick Lee. Things are starting to roll now and we have a number of teams ready to rumble. The YB are putting a team together as is Red Hatter who has enlisted bodies from High Peak and around. New Mills are putting at least one team in ( possibly as many as 4), and one of these is the New Mills first team - the event being used by the clubs new manager as a team bonding exercise. Oh....and the usual suspects...two time winners `Coop Elite 'are in the mix again, and their belief in being able to retain their title displays a confidence bordering on complacency- how very dare they! Come on County fans ...spoil Coop Elite's Saturday...enter a team, or as an individual via johngiles20@hotmail.com - no team...... we will sort one for you and at £3 a person what's not to like? Chris Thompson Fund Raising Event. Saturday, 4 March - Chris Thompson fundraiser We are hosting a night at The Fingerpost to raise money in the memory of our good friend Chris Thompson who as we know sadly passed away just before Christmas. The night will include an auction with various items on offer, raffles and football cards to raise the money. We will also have karaoke and a DJ playing through the night so can also raise a glass or 3 to Chris. If anyone has anything they would like to donate to the raffle or auction please get in touch with us using the Facebook events page: www.facebook.com/events/1565232500184201/

Concluding Article on Keith Allen and County in 1965/66 by Des Hinks.
We conclude our series of articles on Keith Allen by focussing on the FA Cup of 1965-66.
Older fans will never forget the previous season’s Cup exploits when County’s 11,000-strong travelling army outsung the Kop as the Hatters , bottom of Division Four, almost pulled off the biggest FA Cup shock in football history by forcing a fourth round replay in a 1-1 draw at Liverpool.
The First Division Champions won the Edgeley Park replay 2-0 in front of 25,000, with future World Cup winner, Roger Hunt, scoring both goals for Bill Shankly’s men.
It was somewhat ironic then when the draw for the first round the following season saw County again travel to Merseyside, to face Tranmere Rovers.
For fans who find in difficult to comprehend the size of County’s support in the 1960s take a moment to read the editorial that featured in the Rovers’ match programme for the game on November 13, 1965
“It's difficult to imagine a more attractive First Round tie for Tranmere Rovers. There is a rivalry between us and Stockport County, which isn't altogether explained by the fact that they represent West and East Cheshire, and County partisanship is therefore high. That's why many people have forecast that the attendance this afternoon will be a record for a First Round tie at Prenton Park.
“Certainly, County, by their their astonishing revival efforts in the past year or so, have generated an enthusiasm that doesn't seem to be affected in any way by results. They confidently expect to have up to 5,000 fans with them this afternoon!”
It’s also worth mentioning this phenomenal support was for a County side that went into the game 18th in the Fourth Division table!
Rovers, on the other hand, were flying high at the top and were hot favourites to progress to round two.
The Hatters defended in numbers leaving Keith Allen to work tirelessly up front, and the classy striker played his part in a lightening counter attack that saw the diminutive Johnny Price beat Rovers’ ‘keeper, Harry Leyland, with a low shot from the edge of the box.
Rovers laid siege to the County goal throughout the rest of the game when young goalkeeper, Ken Mulhearn, a hero at Anfield the previous season, was absolutely outstanding, producing a series of stunning saves.
Sensing their heroes needed a lift, the travelling hordes, not for the first time and certainly not the last, took the sound levels to another level.
Fans that almost filled the old, wooden main stand at Prenton Park began stamping their feet in time with the incessant chanting from the Cheadle Enders packed behind to goal. The terrace opposite the main stand also joined in, creating an atmosphere that ranks among the very best, as a continuous chant of COUNTY, COUNTY COUNTY inspired the men in royal blue shirts to a famous victory.
County’s reward was another away trip, this time to fierce rivals, Southport. Vic Bernard asked for a Blue & White cavalcade to travel to the coastal town. And the flamboyant chairman led by example as his limo, decked out in blue and white ribbons, headed a convoy of cars and coaches away from Edgeley Park on the day of the game!
The County team emerged from the tunnel at Haig Avenue to a tumultuous welcome from around 4,000 County fans, who, once again, numbered more than half the attendance.
Keith Allen, again wearing the number 9 shirt, fired County in front just before half time. And when the big striker doubled the Hatters advantage just after the break Eddie Quigley’s men seemed to have one foot in round three.
However, the Sandgrounders, a real bogey team for County over many years, had other ideas. And a three goal blast in just seven minutes turned the tie upside down.
Then, with just minutes remaining, the Hatters won a penalty. But the game had been played in incessant rain on a quagmire of a pitch and the penalty spot had been washed away!
It took six or seven minutes for the groundsman to come on with a paint brush and a bucket of lime to paint a mark on the pitch after the referee had paced out 12 yards.
Waiting patiently whilst all this was going on was David Shawcross, stood calmly on the edge of the box with the ball tucked under his arm, gathering his thoughts. If he missed, County were out of the Cup. The Hatters’ greatest penalty taker in living memory did what he always did, send the goalkeeper the wrong way with his quality left foot.
Unfortunately the replay just underlined how inconsistent County were in 1965-66 as they exited the Cup, 2-0, in front of almost 16,000. Southport went on to face Ipswich Town in round three.
A big thank you to every County fan who responded to the appeal to raise funds to commission a Fourth Division Championship Medal for Keith Allen.
