Yeah, but casting Tom Cruise kinda f***ed that before it had started! On that subject though, finally found enough child-free time to finish 'Killing Floor' last week and it's excellent (which is a good job, as I've already collected about ten of the sequels from various charity shops in Sandbach!).
Sadly haven't found the second one yet, so I'm going hunting around Norwich tomorrow morning before watching Norwich take on Villa (in my wife's uncle's posh seats at Carrow Road!). Beats watching County lose to Stalybridge....

the film's good sandy, but nowhere near the book. it isn't just the imagination thing, it's that even with a long film, stuff gets missed out - they never end up getting all the characterisation in. my favourite book in a while though.
i watched 'gone girl' over christmas, having thought the book was really good a year or so ago. that's another where the film's decent, but there's so much of the agony of suspense (and the evil genius of the antagonist) that they just don't get across.

currently halfway through 'raising the dead' about technical cave divers finding (a known about) body and trying to bring it up from 900 feet down a flooded cave system. it's about to go very wrong, and one of them will die... true story and it's going to get nasty.
i'm also halfway through luke smitherd's 'the stone man' which is a really good uk-set 'horror sci-fi'.

Lee Child - 'The Visitor', Jack Reacher book number 4 complete, another superb read. I really can't recommend these highly enough! Now I'm waiting for Jack Reacher book number 5 entitled: 'Echo Burning', should be arriving early next week, and I can't bloody wait! This must be a record, because after receiving 'Echo Burning' shortly after posting this in August 2015, I read one chapter and put it down. Then, for one reason or another, I didn't pick it up again - until the beginning of this week! After seeing the second Tom Cruise movie (Never Go Back) again this week on Sky, I got the urge to get back into it. I've just finished it about ten minutes ago and although I enjoyed it, I found it a bit of a slow burner (no pun intended!) Until the last quarter. I still say 'The Visitor' and 'Killing Floor' are the best ones I've read so far, but they've all been good reads - this one included. I ordered 'Without Fail' yesterday as I approached the business end of 'Echo' and it's been shipped already, so I hope to be starting that one either tomorrow or Monday when it gets here - I am determined not to take the best part of two years to complete this one, however!

While waiting for the next Jack Reacher book, I've started to read one I've had for a while but never got around to reading: 'Provided you don't kiss me - 20 years with Brian Clough' by Duncan Hamilton.
Here's one quote from the book that I've read now-
His [Clough's] first signing wasn't a player. He sold a ghosted article to a national newspaper and bought a cooker with the money. 'Well', he said, explaining himself' 'the one the club had was knackered. But, frankly, I nearly picked it for the team 'cos it was better than most of the squad.'"
I really do miss Cloughie, Football really could do with him right now.

'Without Fail' - Jack Reacher 6 - arrived just over a week ago and is now complete!
Another great read. I'm hoping to see 'Persuader' - Jack Reacher 7 - drop through the letterbox either tomorrow or Monday. I can't wait!

Jack Reacher 7 - 'Persuader' didn't arrive until last weekend for some reason, but I've just finished it now - I can't recommend it highly enough! It's the best one I've read since 'Killing Floor' (Jack Reacher 1) and I am now waiting for number 8 - 'The Enemy' and I can't wait!
If you like Thrillers but haven't yet read any of Lee Child's 'Reacher' books - why not?

If you like Thrillers but haven't yet read any of Lee Child's 'Reacher' books - why not? I'll second that. Excellent reads and so much better than the films I totally agree, Duds. Even though I have been able to suspend my knowledge of the books and enjoy the movies on their own merit, I still maintain that Cruise was absolutely the wrong person to play Reacher when you take the books into account. As mentioned before, however, he personally negotiated the movie rights with Child, so he was never going to cast anyone other than himself after putting all that money into it. Liam Neeson at the age he was when he made the original 'Taken' would have been the ideal candidate for me. What I liked about 'Persuader' was {SPOILER ALERT - CLICK HERE TO REVEAL SPOILER} the way it tied up the two stories ten years apart as the book approached its climax - I thought that was a great piece of writing by Child and really gave the book some proper depth!

I didn't get around to starting the 8th Jack Reacher novel ('The Enemy') until last week, and with my night shifts this week forcing a temporary reading suspension, I have only just finished it - it's yet another great read!
This time Reacher takes the reader back to events around the 1989 New Year celebrations that brought in the 1990s, when he was still a Major in the 110th Military Police, which makes for a refreshing change if you've read the previous 7 books.
I'm now about to receive book number 9: 'One Shot' - the book that Cruise based the first movie on. I'm looking forward to making the definitive comparison between the real Jack Reacher and his big screen counterpart!
I'll report back when I've finished!

Started 'One Shot' on Friday night and I've now just finished it - a brilliant read!
This is the book that Cruise 'based' his first movie on, but there are some massive differences, not least the ending.
Verdict: No contest, the book is so much better - the movie now just seems far too watered down to be able to watch it again.
Number 10: 'The Hard Way' is currently on its way to me!

I finally got around to reading Jack reacher 10: 'The Hard Way' last week and, after one or two delays, I've just finished it - another fantastic read!
These books just keep getting better and better. Lee Child's imagination is just superb, his stories are written with such sublime intelligence that you'd swear he'd been an Army MP himself in the past!
Another highly recommended read!
I've already taken delivery of number 11: 'Bad Luck And Trouble', but will probably take a few days to give my eyes a rest before starting this one.

Very much into Clive Cussler books at the moment.
A bit like James Bond but more believable.
But, re-reading Bill Bryson's "Neither Here nor There". A very funny account of his tour through Europe. (Spoiler alert - he really doesn't like the French).
Just finished Stuart Maconie's "Long Road From Jarrow". Again very funny, but matches modern Britain to that which the Jarrow Crusade marched through in 1936. Thought provoking. The British Bill Bryson.
