The two Everton games were important for County because it was the first test a "Dave Jones" team had. A lot of Danny Begara's players had gone Jones was building his own team and the two games showed that we had a good team. The 955/96 season was transitional then we blitzed it in 96/97.

f***ing john ebbrell. the heartbreak on alun's face...
great game though, highlights and analysis on 'sportsnight' featuring alan hansen's comedy pronunciation of 'john jeffers' which my brother would go on to imitate for years...
...and ian helliwell's goal at goodison and the move that led up to it........one of the best county goals i've ever seen, and against such strong opposition too!

I was talking about those two games on Wednesday night's shift with an Evertonian who remembered us giving them a proper fright. He couldn't believe how far we'd reached shortly after and where we've now ended up. Great goal by Helliwell, but that ball from Toddy made it possible, an astonishing passage of play.

have to remember as well, while it was the 'dogs of war' everton rather than martinez's slick footballing operation, they were the holders when we played them as well - and they nearly fell at the first hurdle. it was one of those where i bought three or four papers the following day to drink up a selection of reviews of our pluck!

I have to say that Ian Halliwell goal at Goodison is one of my favourite all time County goals. Not bad considering he only played about 10 games for us! That Ebbrell goal was a real heart-breaker. I was in the Pop Side for that game and sat quite close to the Everton fans. I remember Armstrong or it may have been Jeff Eckhard having a shot that looked for all the world that it was in then it just curled past the post. I was up a celebrating

I was in the top tier and on my way out if the ground when Alun scored. Raced back up to the top tier to only see them bloody score the winner...gutted and knackered!!
