Just resurrecting the thread we had from the old site where members could suggest hidden musical gems that others may not have heard of so that, in time, we'd get a feel for each other's musical tastes and be able to recommend albums to people.
Here's a couple of old(er) songs that cropped up on my i-pod this morning whilst in the office.
The first, by a band called 'A' is a bit childish and the lyrics aren't great, but if you like the sound of a punkier version of The Police, give it a listen:
The second, is by a band from a few years ago called 'Longview' whose first album was very good but then they appeared to vanish off the radar. This is probably the best song from it, so if you don't like it, avoid the album!
Hope you like and add your own suggestions.

a couple from my journeys home from work playlist... a bit of bizarre, irrepressible jauntiness from 'of montreal'. this is 'heimdalsgate like a promethean curse': and an epic bit of early twilight sad, 'cold days from the birdhouse':

You might like this one (visually anyway).
A Bob Dylan base that was finished by Old Crow Medicine Show.
Picked it up as it's our latest development at guitar club. Sounds good with 20 or so acoustics picking out the song at 4 different levels.

This single 'Obscurity Knocks' (an ironic title as it transpired) was released in 1990 by The Trashcan Sinatras, a band from Irvine, Scotland. They are fronted by Fairground Attraction vocalist Eddie Reader's brother Francis:
Criminally, although it reached number 12 in the US chart, it only made number 86 in the UK chart. Why they never became more popular is beyond me, and the album it was taken from, 'Cake' was excellent too.
The taste of the music-buying people in this country seriously baffles me sometimes.

That KLF mix sounds a lot like some of the concept stuff on the early OMD albums.

A few from Epworth... Kitchens of Distinction (rubbish name, great band) The Sundays Popinjays Salad The Dylans Flight Brigade (I was mates with Olly Baines, the lead singer, when I lived darn sarf in the 80's) That should keep you entertained for a while! I'm a vinyl junkie, so have most of these on LP.

Vinyl junkie here too, matey. Give me a decent turntable, amp and speakers and a good quality box of plastic, and I'm in my element!
I would gladly go back to those days, when you bought music and felt like you'd actually got something for your money! Sometimes progress really isn't what it's cracked up to be.

I used to have a decent stack of black separates myself back in the day, topped off with a very nice Dual turntable, it sounded amazing. I do still have this little beauty of Retroness in my cupboard. This isn't a photo of my own, but I have exactly the same system. Note the both side play, front loading Turntable! You don't get those on MP3 docking stations! Unfortunately the opening/close mechanism has gone on mine, and I have no idea where to take it to get it fixed without it costing me an arm and a leg. I'll get it sorted one day, it's a fabulous piece of 80s hi-fi history!

Unfortunately Gazza, to get it fixed you'd have to take it to 1985!
For me, reading the sleeve and booklet whilst listening to the album (all tracks, in the correct order)for the first time is a vital part of the musical experience. The 'clunk' as the arm returns at the end of the first side is one of the most glorious sounds!
I've got quite a few limited edition colour and picture vinyls. Probably worth diddly squat, but a joy to own.
I dread to think how many hours of my life have been spent at Record Fairs and in the back of independent record stores searching through the secondhand vinyl boxes!

The 78 Record Exchange on Underbank was always a bit of a gold mine for those hard to find classics, and I myself have one or two rare picture discs. The biggest mistake I made though was offloading two Madonna discs I had acquired, this one: and this one: I let them both go to a Madonna-mad mate back in the 80s for just £20 for the pair, and a year or two later I saw them both going for near £50 each in RC. Lord knows what they are worth now, but I don't think I want to!

i've got a trashcan sinatras ep somewhere gazz. 'obscurity knocks' was a pretty good -and sourly apposite- title.
salad got absolutely panned in the music inkies epworth, but i really liked 'drink the elixir' as well, and she's fairly easy on the eyes. didn't rate the album much though.
sundays were definitely one of the student sounds of 1990, although i preferred 'joy', which is absolutely lovely.
i was always negative about cds, but did stop buying vinyl in 1991, when i bought some separates (nice kenwood amp, really good akai cd which i absolutely hammered for about ten years until i also started having problems with the tray, technics twin tape, gale speakers and stupidly expensive interconnects). most of the time i played scratchy lo-fi through them, so the upgrade was essentially pretty pointless...i still buy loads of cds - at least ten so far this year - because i like the object, not the file! music is an obsession i can't imagine ever losing.

as we seem to have gone all ladysingers, i'll stick the aforementioned ' joy' up by the sundays, and ' off you' by the breeders, which i f***ing love.
