Mmmmmm.
Quite a lot to choose from this week, so should be a mixed bag. And, speaking of which, here's an eclectic amuse bouche for you to digest:
Madness Manic Street Preachers Massive Attack Metallica (oh, go on then....) Morrissey.

A couple of 'Double M's' to start with i.e. Manfred Mann & Matt Monro.
A shout too for Marmalade, Curtis Mayfield, Mountain & The Move.
However, for me, it's Van Morrison.
Great musician, singer-songwriter.
Superb solo career following his move away from 'Them' and still going strong today.
Many great albums including 'Moondance' & 'Astral Weeks' & classic singles such as 'Days Like This', 'Domino', 'Gloria', 'Bright Side of the Road' & 'Brown Eyed Girl'.
'Van the Man' - Van Morrison.

Paul McCartney.
Nuff said.
You don't have to like him to recognise the man's influence on music.

Manic Street Preachers for me, another of my dads influences! That is frightening as it's the other way round in our house, the three lads introduced me to their style. Manics for me, please. We did a skit for the kids at school once, 4 of us staff mimed to Design for Life as the "Panic Screech Teachers".

Whenever I hear the Manics "If you tolerate this.." It reminds me of the song my brother told me that opposition fans sang to the Hearts supporters when Graham Rix became manager a few years after that prison sentence...
"... If you tolerate Rix, then your 'censored' will be next.."
Great band though.

More 'M's' than a Crash Test Dummies single...
My Life Story, Matchbox 20, Mega City Four, Miltown Brothers, Mudhoney, Morphine, The Man from Delmonte, Bob Mould (of Husker Du and Sugar fame), The Mocking Birds, Johnny Marr and the Healers, Motion City Soundtrack (another one from Sandy - cheers)
Special mention for The Mock Turtles - Turtle Soup is a fine album. Bit of pop trivia for you: lead singer is Martin Coogan, older brother of Steve
Another special mention, and a close second, is Morcheeba. Big Calm is a great album and Down by the Sea is one of my all time favourite tracks. Hard to describe, and spanning numerous genres, they are well worth a listen.
But after all that 'mmmmmm-ing', my vote goes to the Manic Street Preachers.

I'll give a mention to Madonna, Roger McGuinn and the Mamas and Papas but, for me, the finest female artist of the last 50 years, Joni Mitchell.

Mentions also from me for Motion City Soundtrack (glad you like them Eppers) who are my band of the year - and also song of the year in 'Last Night' - having discovered them a few months back, and Mansun, whose 'Attack of the Grey Lantern' album is still my favourite debut of all time.

Vote change, not having anyone calling me a Scouser! Madness: They along with The Specials provided the soundtrack to my youth, massively popular from 1979 to the mid 80s. Successfully surviving the fading of the British Ska revival scene to become a favourite with the young and old alike, even my Mum and Dad liked them. Their videos were superb too. Still a special mention for McCartney though.

Still a special mention for McCartney though. He deserves one, gazza - and not only for his positive influences... which have been many. In a way, some of the lower-quality output (hello, Frog Chorus!) with which he has got away, without any long-term critical panning, makes him one of the hippest guys in the music business and earns him one of his own trademark thumbs-ups:
