Paul McCartney is to me one of the greatest musical minds in history, could definitely have been a worthy winner in this week!

'The other' Macca doesn't get my vote, though. We really are spoiled for choice on this occasion.
Joni Mitchell and Matt Monro are both good shouts from way back when. The latter's From Russia With Love is, for me, the best Bond theme ever.
Many Musical Moods with which to conjure in Week 'M', too - whether it be rocking out with MC5, or taking things nice 'n' easy with Dean Martin.
Massive Attack's Blue Lines and Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs are all-time great albums. And The Men They Couldn't Hang should have had their version of Green Fields of France re-released to mark the WW1 Centenary, as it knocks Joss Stone's well and truly into a cocked hat.
Goodness, there are so many bands worthy of winning. I loved the wistful and fuzzy breathlessness of Madder Rose, and Melys have to get a big Welsh shout-out, too. Swim by the former and Chinese Whispers by the latter are things of special beauty - and, yeah, I am a fool for plaintive female singing, every time.
Which, in part, ultimately helps decide my first choice... My Bloody Valentine. Bilinda Butcher's vocals are not even the half of it, mind. Combine those with the band's sonic soundscapes of reverse reverb and distortion, Kevin Shields' 'glide guitar' and deeply-buried melody, and you have something very special and mighty. MBV came close to bankrupting their record company due to the costs of producing Loveless - although, in terms of quality (if not initial sales), it proved to be well worth the money - and then, as Shields underwent mental torture in producing another album, took twenty-two years to follow it up. Financial excess, tortured artistry, live performance of an interlude - The Holocaust - that could make ears bleed, and some great, great tunes: check out, in particular, You Made Me Realise, Soon, Feed Me With Your Kiss and - let's hear it for the B-sides - Cigarette In Your Bed. An utterly brilliant modern rock 'n' roll confection, all told.
And, for their sins, they spawned shoegazing. But, then, nobody's completely perfect...

'madness: the rise and fall' is a great album. my bloody valentine's trajectory took them from weedy to pulverising to blissful. the drop back into the big riff after a dozen minutes of white noise in 'you made me realise' is still one of the most mesmerising things i've seen live, and the layers upon layers of guitars in 'sometimes' (from 'loveless', the protracted gestation of which nearly bankrupted a pre-oasis creation records) are beautiful.
i loved 'ghosts of american astronauts' by the mekons, and modest mouse's 'the moon and antarctica' album - it really opens up on its less jittery, more tuneful moments. mercury rev's 'yerself is steam' i bought (in blue see through vinyl) on the same day in 1991 as 'nevermind', and played the former much more than the latter, as 'chasing a bee' and 'coney island psyclone' are psych-noise wonders. both modest mouse and mercury rev were pretty good live too.
but: microphones. a he (phil elvrum) more than a they. saw him once live in manchester as a complete change of pace after watching county earlier in the day. his 'the glow: pt.2' from 2001 or so is brilliant. he's quite erratic, but the title track, 'my roots are strong and deep' and particularly 'i want wind to blow', off that album are lo-fi folk-noise majesty.

Special mentions this week for the Manics, Moby, Alison Moyet, Muse and the sound of my youth, Madness.
But my vote goes to the master of movie soundtracks, Ennio Morricone.

Intended, but forgot, to give a mention yesterday for the Manhattan Love Suicides.
Another feedback-featuring, VU-influenced combo, with a very groovy name, that split up about five years ago... but may, I think, have reformed more recently.
In spite of their Stateside moniker, they actually hail(ed) from Leeds. Perhaps exile knows of them?!

Being a fan of the 80's...
Madonna Mel and Kim Midnight Oil Milli Vanilli Motley Crue Martika The Mighty Wah Alison Moyet
Other include...
M People Kirsty MacColl The Macc Lads (bet you thought you'd see their name on this list!!) Meatloaf The Magic Numbers Manic Street Preachers Barry Manilow Mansun ('Wide open space' is a great song) Mantronix Bob Marley Morrisey Maroon 5 Massive Attack Curtis Mayfield Paul McCartney Kylie Minogue Moby (Don't like his music at all except for the song played at the end of all the Bourne films) Alanis Morrissette Van Morrison My Chemical Romance
Tough one for me this week, 3 way race between Morrisey, Bob Marley and The Macc Lads as they remind me of some good times through my journey of life! After much thought i'm going to have to go with Bob Marley as I can save Morrisey for S and The Smiths! (my favourite Bob song is Could you be Loved closely followed by Redemption Song)

Their Burnt Out Landscapes compilation is definitely a recommended investment, if you want to hear more!

My vote goes to Bob Marley... don't think anyone has become more synonymous with their genre than Bob has with Reggae. An absolute genius that left us too soon.
