crikey. that's almost a guided by voices set. and like gbv, having a lot of fast, short ones helps.

The Electro Hippies used to be able to fit that many into a five-minute set!

just listening to 'low' by bowie as i'm reading the 33 1/3 book on it, and 'sound and vision' has come on. what a f***ing tune that is, and even more so that some of the lyrics ("grey blinds drawn all day, nothing to do, nothing to say") was about his psychotic breakdown in LA when he was shutting the curtains and surviving on raw peppers, milk, cocaine and occult rituals. bang that over some treated drums, funky bass and glistening guitar, and you have a classic.

Great post, mate. He was the greatest, bar none - I still can't believe he's no longer with us.

After a flick through my digital music collection on my PC this evening (well, last night), I stopped at the Kate Bush folder and played a few tracks. It's amazing how talent like hers can just fall off the grid and barely get a mention these days, but at her best she was absolutely fantastic! Just thought I'd share that thought.

every so often, beeb 4 puts on 'running up that hill: the kate bush story' followed by 'kate bush at the bbc'. i've watched each a couple of times because while i could quite easily do without the posho dance/mime b*ll*cks, she really was a singular talent with an ear for strange songs and strange melodies that nevertheless hit home so much for a lot of people.
'wuthering heights' was preceded at number 1 by 'stayin alive', and followed by blondie's 'denis', then 'i can't stand the rain', 'baker street', then brian and michael and their cloth cap lowry tribute. i very vaguely remember it at the time, but for older chartwatchers, it must have dropped like an ethereal bomb (which sounds a bit of an oxymoron).

one of my workmates is off to see buxton/chapel-en-le-frith's finest, lloyd cole, tonight.
...which has made me dust this off, with its lovely accordion and backing vocals:

any chance you'll make one of them downy? bit of a trek aren't they in melbourne and sydney? just read steve morris's book and that inevitably triggered me to soak up more factory/joy division/wilson/new order shennanigans for the millionth time. it truly is the story that never gets old, even though the players themselves don't always tell it that interestingly.

yeah. bits of his lyrics - such as " i might come to a conclusion other than that which is absolutely necessary" from 'perfect skin' seem to lurk permanently in my forebrain. 'double pneumonia in a single room, and the sickest joke was the price of the medicine' has a real morrissey ring to it too.
