Off to see the Travelling Wilburys tomorrow night. As 3/5ths of the originals are no longer with us you may have worked out that this is a tribute act. I shall report back on Saturday. One of the best £20 per head session ever seen. If they are near you anytime well worth 2 hours of your evening. "Roy Orbison and the Traveling Wilburys Experience". (Buxton Opera House 18th October) 6 very talented musicians (inc drummer). Each with their own take on ELO, Orbison, Petty, Dylan and Harrison who really seemed to enjoy playing for each other and interacting with the audience. They raffle of a signed Epiphone Les Paul electric guitar at each show as well. Pity I don't have room at home for it. (I have an Epiphone 365 Dot - sunburst red as in Chuck Berry's original !)

Superb concert last night with all the beautiful south favourites. Great to see the place packed out and a spectacular firework finish. Not going to the Blossoms one but looking forward to next year.

how was it set up ceef? where was the stage facing? were you on the pitch, in the stands? cheers Entry to Hardcastle Street was at the Bung end only and the frisking took place in the main car park at the CE. They had all the stands open except the away end corner of the Pop stand and i think all the seats were unreserved. Ended up half way down in the Moanstand. 1 screen either side of the gargantuan stage at the RE. I was driving so had to stay off the beer, Saw many double size plastic glasses, a coke was 2.70 - but they were doing a roaring trade at the bar tents on-the pitch. The place was packed and everyone seemed happy. I felt like i was coming out of wembley being carried along with the sheer number of people leaving ( almost said fans). Sound and volume was great so no complaints. A young girl sat behind me (maybe 10) surprised me by knowing the words to almost every song. Got away to the m60 with no delay. Whoever arranged the event knee what they were doing. A superb evening was had by all. Next up Cowboy Junkies at Holmfirth in July.

a ten year old singing stinging words dressed up in pretty tunes? one of paul heaton's great skills.
cheers for the write up. i didn't realise/remember my cousin was going to blossoms until he sent me a couple of photos from the padded seats in the main stand! i am hoping he's going to take one back to block f for me. he reckoned it seemed a very professional job as well.

Belle and Sebastian were magnificent at the Manchester Albert Hall on Wednesday night. First time I've been to the venue and it's great - an old church with stained glassed windows, gallery and bouncy floor. The sun going down during the gig created a wonderful effect - almost like a festival.
Stuart Murdoch was on top form and the whole band were brilliant - including 4 violins, cello and trumpet.
Loving the new single, too

Got finally off to finally dozin' late last night (avoiding the inevitable M62 night closure). It wasn't a three day party, ars, but I did need the strength of Sampson to manage the crush in the ever-so-slightly-too-small-academy Pixies were mighty fine, but not outstanding. The mate I was with, let’s call him Danny, as that’s his name, was really impressed – this is because he doesn’t know much of their stuff apart from the famous ones, so it was all quite new to him. As a complete Pixies geek, however, I knew what it could have been and there were a few issues. The set list wasn't that great overall. The classics they played were generally amazing, but the order was a bit odd. They did a cover song as the second song (I think - if it wasn't second, it was very early on). The middle section had a run of new songs from the album which was only released on Friday. They are also a bit more mellow, so there was a general drop in energy. They also played Snakes from Indie Cindy which is quite a poor song. They ended with Isla de Encanta, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Wave of Mutilation, St. Nazaire (latest single), No. 13 Baby and then Tame - which was an amazing end... and set it up beautifully for an encore of Debaser and Gigantic. Inexplicably, they just played Daniel Boone - a ballad from the new album which nobody really knew. Felt a bit cheated not getting those two songs and getting Snakes and Havilina instead – would happily have traded them! So, with a riotous end, after the encore, everyone just shrugged and left feeling a bit flat. To be fair, opening with Gouge Away and playing Crackity Jones, I've Been Tired, Nimrod's Son, Mr Grieves, Bone Machine, Cactus and some of the other classics were great. Having said that, I felt that Joey was off it a bit at times. Some of his riffs lacked clarity (for example, he didn't nail Here Comes Your Man until the final chorus). I'd also read of his Vamos solo becoming legendary (including strumming with his cap!), and we had none of that. Overall, a fine, fine night, and Pixies are still a cut above most bands even when they are below par, and they definitely could have been so much better. 7.5/10 (Oh, and The Big Moon as support were really good. Not in Pixies league yet, though, as they were having to clear their own gear off the stage with a bit of help from Pixies roadies!)

i sort of think it's a hard sell for them. they want to show that they're a going concern and not just trading on the late eighties...but the new songs haven't had 30 years to bed in. i was often irritated by bands playing loads of new songs, when their previous stuff i liked was only a year or two old. of course, most of their audience wants 'doolittle' and 'surfer rosa', and the slightly more committed want the 'purple tape' and 'come on pilgrim'. i like the idea of seeing the likes of gouge away, cactus, i've been tired and tame live though...that's pretty cool.

Cheers for the review, Eppers. Sounds as if it was a bit of a Curate's egg of a gig, but I have still ordered the new album on the strength of it. How could I not?!

I agreed it a tricky balance, ars. I guess I had high hopes having seen the set lists for the earlier gig and felt they were better than Leeds. Overall there were just enough classics to keep me going, but wanted more. Although almost 40 songs, of which 12 were from the new album, is hardly the worst gig ever!

Yeah, it’s a really good album fortunately, as they played all 12 songs from it! The first 2 singles are good to sing along to, I really like Paz’s singing on Los Surfers Muertos and Death Horizon is a good ending. I’m still getting into it, but definitely worthy of a place in the record collection.
