i can remember seeing the video on 'top of the pops', and from the drum machine onwards, it wasn't like anything else i'd heard before. the video was brilliant for the time as well.

Some excellent choices there, cf. 'Superstition' is seriously top drawer, as is Stevie.

'heart of gold' is a f***ing great song archie. personally, i'd go 'i just wasn't made for these times' for my beach boys track, and 'america' for simon & garfunkel; but that's just splitting hairs.

You could pick almost any track off Pet Sounds and it would blow away most of the contemporary stuff. Splitting even more hairs, I'm not sure that the excellent I Just Wasn't Made For These Times was ever a single but it was possibly the first rock/pop track to use a theremin. God Only Knows is a regular pick on favourite songs but I had to include it because it's just the perfect love song and no-one has ever bettered Carl Wilson's vocals. I probably saw the Beach Boys in concert half a dozen times between 1965 and 1975 and it was always a good show. Likewise the two S & G concerts in the mid 60s (before either The Boxer or America) and Neil Young at the Festival Hall in the early 70s where the setlist includes Heart Of Gold but I really don't remember it in that detail.

course it wasn't! forgot the rules...
i like 'i know there's an answer'/'hang on to your ego' quite a bit as well. 'god only knows' is obviously great too. fantastic that you saw them multiple times and s&g too. i'm not sure my six pavements or eight sparklehorses really compare!
