Whilst I'm not the biggest fan of Rugby Union, this is a career that deserves to be celebrated.....with the Newcastle Falcons he won the Premier League in 1998 and 2 Powergen Cups in 2001 and 2004 before winning European Rugby's top prize, the Heineken Cup in 2013 with Toulon.
For England he won the 6 Nations 4 times, in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2011 before bowing out of international Rugby, the 2003 success being a grand slam. He was also a World Cup runner up in 2007 but most famously won the World Cup for England against the Aussies in Australia with a drop goal in the last minute of extra time.
Happy retirement to a great servant to English sport!

Agreed, Fudgie,. I'm not a Rugby fan at all, but his World Cup heroics alone should guarantee him legendary status, and I can't imagine he'd have to buy too many pints on a night out!

Because of his heroics against the Aussies he made sure that I'd get to see England win the World Cup at least once in my life time, even if it isn't in Football!

I do like my Rugby, having played it when I was younger. Johnny was a legend and a thoroughly decent person too. Superb career, but THAT drop goal at the end of the 2003 WC final against the Aussies will go down in folklore. It was the Rugby equiv of the Geoff Hurst hat-trick.

a brilliant career. to be able to say you've bagged the winning points in your sport's world cup in the back yard of one of the game's powerhouses is pretty fantastic. and then you can add for good measure 'well i'm left footed really but i took that one with my right...'

Not to mention the fact that the powerhouses in question are one of our biggest rivals who rubbed it in when they did the same in '91
