And so we come to Notts County, but seemingly not the Notts County that were tearing up L2 before Luke Williams left for Swansea.
What can we tell about them then? Well at W 17 D 7 L 19 F 86 A 80, they sit 14th in L2. Their H record is equally mixed - W 11 D 2 L 8 F 48 A 37, which is 12th in L2. So at present they can proudly boast to be joint top scorers in L2 (86 - along with County), ahead of Mansfield (85), Wrexham (84), MKD (74) and Swindon (73). At the same time they have also conceded the most goals (80 - along with Salford), ahead of Sutton (78), Rock Bottom FGR (77), Swindon (76), Morecambe (also 76), Cole U (74),Newport (71) and, rounding out the Over 70's Club Grimsby on 70. So it's all rather schizophrenic.
Their Ws are Grimsby (H) 3-2, Donny (A) 1-3, Tranmere (H) 2-1, Accy Stanley (H) 3-1, Salford (A) 0-2, FGR (H) 4-3, Swindon (H) 3-1, Gillingham (A) 1-2, Newport (H) 3-0, Bratfut (H) 4-2, Crawley (H) 3-1, Donny (H) 3-0, Morecambe (H) 5-0, Newport (A) 1-3, Bratfut (A) 0-3, Harrogate (H) 3-0 and Walsall (A) 1-3.
Their Ds are Morecambe (A) 0-0, MKD (A) 1-1, Barrow (A) 1-1, Grimsby (A) 5-5, Barrow (H) 1-1, Accy Stanley (A) 2-2 and MKD (H) 3-3.
Their Ls are Sutton (A) 5-1 on opening day, Cole U (A) 5-4, Mansfield (H) 1-4, Wrexham (H) 0-2, Crewe (A) 1-0, AFC Wombles (A) 4-2, Walsall (H) 1-2 Harrogate (A) 3-1, County (A) 2-1, Tranmere (A) 4-2 - Luke Williams' last game in charge, Mansfield (A) 1-0, Gillingham (H) 1-3, Wrexham (A) 1-0, Crewe (H) 1-3, Sutton (H) 3-4, AFC Wombles (H) 0-2, Crawley (A) 2-1, Salford (H) 1-2 and Swindon (A) 2-1.
Overall, they haven't beaten any top sides, mostly beating up mid and lower table sides, conceding doubles against Mansfield, Wrexham and Crewe and losing to County back in Dec. Sure, they can score goals, hitting 3+ 17 times and being blanked just 6 times. They've conceded 3+ 12 times and kept just 7 clean sheets. All in all since Williams left they are W 4 D 4 L 9 F 31 A 33, although in Apr they D with MKD 3-3 and beat Harrogate and Walsall. They seem to have settled on 3 CBs and a 3 - 1 - 4 - 2 shape so maybe that is starting to work for them.
Their top scorer is, of course, Macaulay Langstaff on 26 in L2 this term, say no more. MF Daniel Crowley has scored 14 in 43 apps this term, he was previously at Morecambe ( 2 goals in 21 apps) and Birmingham (1 goal in 41 apps) along with a bunch of other clubs. Next is David McGoldrick on 12 goals in 34 apps, he was signed last summer from Derby County (22 goals in 39 apps) and has prior form with Sheff Utd, Ipswich and Notts Forest. Fellow forward Aaron Nemane has scored 8 in 41 apps, fellow striker Jodi Jones has scored 6 times in 40 games. There are plenty more goals from plenty more players but you get the picture.
The first notable piece of business in the transfer window was the loan signing, from Fulham, of 6ft 3 ex County loanee GK Luca Ashy-Hammond, he has now appeared 8 times between the sticks for the Magpies. New manager Stuart Maynard (ex Wealdstone headman) wasted little time in securing the loan from Norwich City of 6ft 4 CB Jayden Warner who has now appeared 10 times, he was followed by fellow loanee, this time from Crewe, MF Charlie Colckett and the permanent signing of 6ft 4 Gambian forward Alassana Jatta from Danish 1st division club Viborg - he has now scored 5 times in 8 games for Notts.
So they look to be addressing a few issues and things may be looking up at last after a very difficult spell since Maynard took over and good luck to them. They certainly look capable of giving County a game but their weaknesses at the back do not seem to have gone away. I suspect that if County play anything like they are capable of this should be another win.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in L2 on Tuesday:
Crawley (7th) v Barrow (6th)
Mansfield (3rd) v Accy Stanley (18th)
