Good selection, herm. And if you had to pick one out of all those, which would it be? You Really Got Me, cheers.

Can I make a suggestion, Eps?
Rather than post our five and then choose our favourite from them in the same post, we simply post our own selections before the deadline, then we all consider every selection posted and then vote on the best, or is that what's going on here and some of us have misunderstood?

Don't mind how we do it. I was going to see which was the most frequent selected favourite and that would be the winner.
In the event of a tie, then the vote would be on the favourites - likely to be, what, 8-10 songs?
If we voted on all of them, then it could be 30+ songs. Unless I've misunderstood what you?
Happy for suggestions from anyone - not done this before so I'll go with what we think is best.

What I mean is we all post our five songs, then at the end we look through every song posted and vote for our favourite.

A half-dozen that narrowly missed out on my shortlist...
1961
Ray Charles: Hit the Road Jack
With a name-check, too, for the brilliant backing vocal contribution from Margie Hendrix.
1963
Cilla Black: Love of the Loved
Spirited debut, written by her mates Lennon & McCartney.
Kingsmen: Louie Louie
Primal three-chord wonder that is the most-recorded rock song. Ever.
1964
Petula Clark: Downtown
The English take by Tony Hatch on city life in New York - and, I think, the first melody I can recall hearing in my earliest years.
Roy Orbison: It's Over
The perfect operatic rock ballad.
Rolling Stones It's All Over Now
Hasty cover of a Valentinos number that featured, and had been co-written by, Bobby Womack, as well as giving the Stones their first British Number One.

We're mining an incredibly rich seam of music with this thread. Every time I read it, new contenders spring to mind - and I can only imagine this will intensify as we pass through the years!
A thought about voting for the ultimate winner...
What if the shortlist were to comprise each poster's declared favourite, and then we were each to have two votes: one (presumably) for our own fave, and one for someone else's? That would keep the choice manageable, and avoid the potential chance of a six-way tie every week!

louie louie you really got me house of the rising sun walk on by and i don't think i've seen 'up on the roof' mentioned, which i think i said on the music association is one of the prettiest vocal melodies ever recorded.
i tried to judge the above five on the basis of if i could only hear one again...and that doesn't really work, as they all have something, like the vim and vigour of the first two, the vocal performances and musical accompaniament to the next two, such as the little horn pattern between the phrases 'walk on by' and 'foolish pride'. think for today i'll choose carole king's gorgeous melody though. for some reason i always instinctively feel that 'up on the roof' and 'send in the clowns' are the two songs with the prettiest vocal melodies out there.

I was chatting to a friend about this thread last night. He's a proper muso who played mandolin in a folk band in New York in the 2000s - as you do.
He mentioned...
John Lee Hooker - Boom Boom Howlin' Wolf - Killing Floor

I've done a few of my favourite songs on karaoke back in the day including 'Runaround Sue' by the absolute legend that is Dion and 'Breathless' by the killer, but for some reason that one never occurred to me, even though It's also one of my favourites and I can actually sing that one too - I would need a skinful beforehand, though! I might have to stick that on my 'pi**ed up 'to do' list'.

Howlin' Wolf - Killing Floor 'Spoonful' is my favourite Howlin' Wolf song, it's absolutely sublime.

Is there a limit to how many songs we can suggest, Eps?
