If life is a Cabaret, old chum, are you ready to get all CHUMY?
County Heaven's Ultimate Musical Years
Music has been a huge part of County Heaven for years. The Music Discussion Thread is always active and recently, Music Association Thread clocked up its 10,000th song!
We’ve had CHUMS, where we created an A-Z of our favourite tracks. Well, this will work in a similar way, except it is by years.
Each week will focus on a 5 year span, starting with 1960 – 1964. Each subsequent week will cover the next 5 year 1965-1969, 1970-1974, and so on, until we reach 2020-2024. (Ok, so we won’t have all of 2024, but maybe we can revisit this last one at the end of the year)
The only rule is that the song must have been released during the timeframe.
I’ll go first each week and provide a selection to get us started. It won’t necessarily be all to my tastes, but a guide, and all Heaveners are encouraged to add their own suggestions. You can provide a shortlist of any songs you like as suggestions and then indicate your favourite (and maybe tell a story or two behind some of them).
At the end of the week, I’ll add up the nominations for favourite songs and the song with the most will be declared the winner and added to our playlist. In the case of ties, we’ll run a poll to get to our final song. I won’t be counting my own vote, but if the poll is a tie, then I will cast the deciding vote. (If everyone just votes for their own song, this might evolve into a music sharing and story telling thread!)
As well as sharing our musical tastes and preferences and building a playlist, we want to start debates and hear your stories – why you chose the songs - how much you choose to share is up to you: happy or sad, funny or serious.
Right, see you Monday for 1960-1964. I wonder if we'll have any Stormy Weather...?

Yup, started to put a selection together for the first post - aiming for 5. I've got 10 and not sure how I'm going to reduce it down. How we're going to pick one, I've no idea - some absolute belters in the early 60s!

How we're going to pick one, I've no idea - some absolute belters in the early 60s! How about pick 5 songs that are evenly spaced out between 1960 and 1964 in terms of release dates, one from each year if that makes it easier?

For fun, I recently compiled a Desert Island Discs 8. It was 5 from the 60s and 3 from the 70s so best of luck with your early selections.
I have a theory that most people think that the peak times for music were when they were aged approximately 15 to 30, these being the years when you start to mature your tastes and have the money and lack of other responsibilities to build a collection. Thus, for me, music started in 1963 and subsided in 1978.

It then picks up again, Archie, and to the disgust of your three teenage sons when you approve of some of their choices !!!
ie Manics, Stereophonics, Travis etc

Had I had children, I would have considered it my bounden duty to convert them to 'my' music. There's always the temptation to compare new groups with those that they seem to want to emulate. Blur were the Kinks crossed with the Small Faces, Oasis the Beatles etc. Given that CDs didn't go mainstream until the mid 80s, I suppose it says something that I have about 180 of them although a fair percentage represent 60s and 70s music.
