So much for Harrogate, time to think about Grimsby - what can we tell about them then?
Well they sit in 20th spot, 7 points clear of the drop zone with a record of W 6 D 11 L 12 F 41 A 51. Their H record is not much better: W 5 D 4 L 6 F 25 A 29, which is 19th in the league. So they look like a side that can score but can't keep a clean sheet too often. If FGR and Sutton were not so poor Grimsby would be eyeing the trapdoor warily.
Their Ws are Salford (h) 2-0, Gillingham (h) 2-0, Barrow (h) 2-1, Morecambe (h) 3-2, Crewe (h) 2-1 and Salford (a) 0-3. The Ds are AFC Wombles (h) 0-0 on opening day, Mansfield (h) 1-1, Walsall (a) 1-1, Bratfut (a) 1-1 (4 draws in their first 7 games), Tranmere (a) 2-2, FGR (a) 2-2, Sutton (h) 1-1, MKD (a) 1-1, Newport (a) 1-1, Notts (h) 5-5 and Accy Stanley (a) 0-0. The Ls are Notts County (a) 3-2, Wrexham (a) 3-0, Crawley (h) 2-3, Swindon (a) 2-1, Accy Stanley (h) 0-2, County (a) 3-2 (back in Oct, Cole U (h) 2-3, Donny (a) 1-0, Harrogate (h) 1-2, Mansfield (a) 2-0, Walsall (h) 1-6 and Tranmere (h) 1-2.
That's just 5 cleans sheets (3 Ws and 2 Ds), and recent form, since Ex Crewe boss Dave Artell took over at the end of Nov - W 2 D 4 L 4 F 15 A 20 - suggests a side that can't find a consistent pattern of play or results. Of their 6 Ws 2 are against struggling Salford and one over Goal-Shy Gillingham, although a couple of upsets against Barrow and Crewe suggest they can rise to an occasion. They seem to switch between a 4-3-2-1 and a 4-1-4-1 shape recently.
Their top scorer is striker Danny Rose on 10, (he has bounced around a few lower league clubs - Stevenage, Northampton, Mansfield and Bury, totalling 78 goals in 371 apps), next comes MF Abo Eisa on 8 in 26 apps this season (he has previous spells at Bratuft, Scunny, Cole and Shrewsbury on his CV. Next comes striker Donovan Wilson on 6, he was last at Sutton where he scored 15 goals in 90 apps. Striker Rekeil Pike has 4 goals in 19 apps this term having previously been at Scunny and Shrewsbury as well as a clutch of lower league loans. A further 7 players have 12 goals between them.
Dave Artell as you might expect did some wheeling and dealing in January's window, signing Blackpool's D Doug Tharme, he spent most of last season on loan at Accy Stanley, and took Hull MF Harry Wood and Coventry striker Jordan Obikwu. Not satisfied with that on deadline day they signed Cheltenham Town MF Curtis Thompson ( 127 apps for Wycombe and 83 for Notts amongst other clubs) and Portsmouth LB Denver Hume (68 apps for Sunderland) on free transfers as well as RB Liam Smith (over 200 apps for a slew of Scottish clubs) on loan from Cheltenham. Going the other way was MF Kamil Conteh to Bristol Rovers on a 3 year deal.
So there's a lot of change and it's hard to read what sort of side County will face but this should still be winnable, fingers crossed as ever. Meanwhile, elsewhere in L2 on Fri 9th Feb 7th placed Notts play 10th placed Gillingham and then on Sat 10th:
9th placed Wimbledon v 3rd placed Barrow
5th placed Crewe v 14th placed Crawley
24th placed FGR v 2nd placed Mansfield
8th placed Harrogate v 21st Cole U
6th placed MKD v 11th placed Accy
4th placed Wrexham v 18th placed Bratfut
Come on County, a good time to bag another win.
