I've been meaning to have a look at Notts for a little while and, well, this seems like a good time so: what can we tell about Notts County?
Well they currently sit 6th with a record of P 22 W 11 D 3 L 8 F 44 A 41. That makes them joint 2nd highest scorers in L2 with Crewe and Wrexham, with Swindon 1 goal behind on 43. We all know who is L2s top scorers don't we? Their goals conceded though is poor, exceeded only by Swindon (43), Cole U (44) and Rock Bottom Sutton (48). Their H record is much better than A - H W 8 L 3 F 27 A 19 vs A W 3 D 3 L 5 F 17 A 22.
Their Ws are Grimsby (h) 3-2, Disappointing Donny (a) 1-3, Tranmere (h) 2-1, Accy Stanley (h) 3-1, Salford (a) 0-2, FGR (h) 4-3, Swindon (h) 3-1, Gillingham (a) 1-2, Newport (h) 3-0, Bratfut (h) 4-2 and Crawley (h) 3-1. Their Ds are Morecambe (a) 0-0, MKD (a) 1-1 and Barrow (a) 1-1. Their Ls are Rock Bottom Sutton (a) 5-1, Cole U (a) 5-4, Mansfield (h) 1-4, Wrexham (h) 0-2, Crewe (a) 1-0, AFC Wombles (a) 4-2, Walsall (h) 1-2 and Harrogate (a) 3-1.
Now that's just 2 Ws against top ten sides, 2 Ds against the same, and 4 Ls against the same. Now without wanting to be controversial or provocative - that don't impress me much. In fact recent form, adding in some Cup games is really poor - W3 L 7, and if you watch Shrewsbury's goals from their FA Cup win against Notts there is some truly woeful, indeed "criminal", defending. So what I'm seeing is a side that has had a fairly gentle schedule so far and been beating up teams in the bottom half.
They have some good goal scorers though... Macauley Langstaff has 14 (16 including cups), he was previously at York City (11 Goals in 52 apps) and Gateshead (31 Goals in 53 apps) he has 56 goals in 65 games for Notts, 42 of them in the promotion campaign from the National League. Next up comes MF Dan Crowley with 8 (he previously played for Birmingham, Morecambe and a couple of spells at Dutch club Willem II), also on 8 is David McGoldrick (he had spells at Soton, Forest, Ipswich, Sheff Utd and Derby). Maltese forward Jodi Jones has 4, (he played 70 games for Coventry and 16 on loan to Notts last term. MF John Bostock has 2 and 8 others have 1 apiece. So 30 out of their 44 goals this season come from 3 players....
Back in the summer, in addition to re-signing McGoldrick, they signed GK Aidan Stone from Port Vale (he has played 15 times this season), MF Dan Crowley came over from Morecambe, D Ollie Tipton came on season long loan from Wolves, also on loan, till Jan in this case, Lewis Macari, came over from St*ke. Finally in Nov they signed much travelled MF Dan Gosling (previously of Bournemouth and Watford, amongst others). So not that many signings which suggests that they thought their squad didn't need much work. Not sure I agree....
Anyway, it will be very interesting to see what sort of team turns up on Friday, I'm far from convinced that they are really a playoff team, unless they strengthen at the back in Jan.
Elsewhere in L2 on Friday:
23rd placed FGR v 10th placed Gillingham
13th placed Crawley v 7th placed AFC Wombles
5th placed Crewe v 2nd placed Barrow
And on Saturday:
9th placed Accy Stanley v 15th placed Walsall
8th placed Morecambe v 11th placed MKD
Rock Bottom Sutton v 4th placed Mansfield
3rd placed Wrexham v 17th placed Newport.
Other than Crewe v Barrow most of the top 10 teams will be facing lower placed teams so a good chance for them to catch County up, so fingers crossed some of the magic from Saturday will still be in their air at EP. Looking a little further ahead County visit Barrow on Boxing day then we have Bratfut and Mansfield at H so a tough little spell... Fingers crossed...
