So what do we know about Rochdale then? (Yes, if this looks familiar it's the one I did for Take 1 but updated stats etc)
Well their record, as you'd expect of the team 24th out of 24 is not good - P 32 W 5 D 6 L 21 F 25 A 49. The home record at the Crown Oil Arena (or Spotland if you prefer) is little better P 16 W 2 D 3 L11 F 12 A 24, which is 24th out of 24, and reminiscent of the kind of season County fans of a certain vintage endured in the past. Fun Fact: I used to travel up to Rochdale to watch the Brisca F1 Stock Car racing, although that was at Milnrow, home to Rochdale Hornets Rugby club. By heck that was bracing.
The H Ws are 2-1 v Barrow and 1-0 over Salford City. The Ds are 1-1 with Crawley, 1-1 v Newport and 1-1 v Northampton. The Ls are 1-2 to Crewe, 0-1 to Grimsby, 0-1 to Orient, 1-2 to Donny, 1-2 to AFC Wombledon, 0-1 to Mansfield, 1-4 v Harrogate. 1-2 v Hartlepool, 1-2 v Colchester, 0-1 v Carlisle and 0-2 v Gillingham.
So it's a sorry tale. Joint top scorers are strikers Ian Henderson and Devante Rodney (Ex on-loan Hatter) on 6 with on-loan Scott Quigley, of this parish, and presumably not available for this game on 5. Then comes MF Tyrese Sinclair (son of Chelsea's Frank) on 3, MF Jimmy Ball (another former Hatter with 14 Gs in 74 Apps) on 2 and then Danny Lloyd (yes, that Danny Lloyd) and MF Liam Kelly both on 1. Oh and there's also Jimmy McNulty who played for County in the playoff win over (checks notes) Rochdale.
As you'd expect they were active in the transfer window, signing GK Jake Eastwood on loan from Sheff U, Wycombe Wandererers Forward D'Mani Mellor and Bur*ley LB Owen Dodgson also both on loan and D Rhys Bennett returns after a spell at Morecambe. Well I guess those moves count as strengthening but it all seems rather forlorn. I doubt even the signing of the ghosts of Rochdale's most famous sons - Doug Cronshaw and The 1 And Only Stuart Smith, could save them. Although it would probably make a big mess of the pitch if they did.
It's always tempting to assume that this would be an easy win but I suspect that County's recent form may spur the Dale to raise their game and there's always the risk of "after the Lord Mayor's Show". So this could be a bit tricky, or sticky, depending on the state of the pitch. A bit of a banana skin I suspect.
Anyway, fingers crossed as ever.
