I'm wondering if there has been any thought/discussion at the club about potential salary caps in both the National League and the Football League.
The latest information that I can find is that the National League have agreed a salary cap for the 2022/23 season but not put any figures on it. The chatter seems to be that it might be a fixed figure as low as £900k or a percentage of turnover with 70% the favourite. For reference, the recent financial statement from County had the 2020/21 turnover at £2.1M (70% = £1.47M) and Wrexham had a turnover of £1.478M (70% = £1.035M).
For League 2, there was a salary cap installed in 2020 but it was suspended in 2021 and is apparently still in limbo.
All fairly woolly but, given the spending of the 2 clubs, it could be significant after the promotion places are decided. In the list of highest earning National League players, Wrexham have 4 of the top 6 and County have the other 2. The 4 Wrexham players earn an aggregate of £14000 a week and simple maths makes that equivalent to about two thirds of their potential salary cap. Doesn't leave much for the rest of the squad.
It feels as if County have more room for manoeuvre but I've only seen the headline figures in the financial statement. It would be interesting to see if there was a note of total player salaries. You'd like to think that this has been discussed at board level and there will be no nasty surprises at the June AGMs of the respective leagues.

From the Co-op's January minutes of meeting with the Club:
Q. Is there a salary cap for the National League and Division Two next season? What is the structure?
A. The National League has not made a decision on this yet. There will be a vote at the next AGM. Even if the vote is to go ahead with a salary cap, it wouldn’t be implemented straight away and wouldn’t apply to players already at the Club.
The EFL has salary cost management protocol. In League 1 it is 60% of turnover and for League 2 it is 55%. The Club should be ok within those parameters.

I've not looked through them again or watched the most recent one, but I think salary caps came up in SW interviews and my take-away was in keeping with the above - that it won't be a problem, basically.

Thanks for that H.
It's very difficult to get information on the situation by the normal online queries. I was never worried about the National League but, before it was suspended, the salary cap in L2 was either £1M or £1.25M depending on who you believe. The 55% of turnover protocol fits in with this for us and probably favours us over clubs with average attendances of, say, 3000 but it still has to be factored in to player acquisition. Turnover is historical data so I imagine there is some flexibility to smooth this out over more than one season.
The reason that I brought this up was comments on the Wrexham fans forum about how big a budget they would have for next season. It's ok to have the money available but not so ok if you aren't allowed to spend it.
