I've been thinking for a few days about the strength and depth of the squad, which certainly looks a lot better than a few weeks ago. This is partly the point I made a while back about County sounding like a good squad playing badly rather than a bad squad. On present form County look like being a strong contender for automatic promotion, but sooner or later injuries and suspensions can throw things off. So my question is are there any pieces missing from County's Squad - either in the first team or in terms of depth? What about balance as well - for me one of the best things about Chris Marsden was that he was naturally left footed and Toddy was able to play left or right back well and John Jeffers and/or Luis Cavaco could play left wing. So the team was nicely balanced. What do people think? Are County pretty much the finished article or still need a few better players?

As the Wealdstone manager pointed out, there are some decent players not even making the squad, never mind the first 11. I doubt they need any more players but were the club to be struck by an injury crisis I'm sure Mr Stott has the wherewithal to allow Challinor a gallop at the loan market.

You would think that we have enough in the can to carry us through a few injuries and suspensions that will start to kick in.
Not convinced that Ross is better than Ben (think DC has this idea as well). Perhaps a stronger keeper in the air as cover for Hinchy. I wish I had been 6ft 5inches. I would never have missed a cross in all my life.

Could probably do with another Director of Football, to be honest.

Good questions.
Agree with whats been said here. The squad seems large enough enabling players to have to fight to get in the starting line up. Competition for places is what it should be about.
Note the relative absence of Rooney and Hogan who were always guaranteed a starting place under the baby biscuit regime.
The loan market should provide short term replacements should they be required.
The players need to remain motivated, up their work rate and follow DC's instructions.
The cup run should have instilled that extra level of confidence to go on and build a platform to gain promotion.

We have a very large squad and are pretty well covered for all positions.
It’s been good to see Ryan Rydel and Ben Barclay getting game time and with Quigley, Madden and sarcevic we have a formidable front three. I agree that we’ve not missed Rooney or hogan, I see them as squad players now. It does make you wonder who was picking the team before…

Hmmm, interesting comments. I confess I have a sort of (aspirational) 1996/7 feeling about this squad aaannddd 1996/7 was 25 years ago amirite? I get the feeling that this squad can put together one of those 15 - 20 game unbeaten streaks that the best teams can have and pick up plenty of wins in that time. I still wonder a little about the back 3 or 4, but fingers crossed County are now such an attacking force that a little leak here or there will not be too much of an incovenience. I'll still keep my fingers crossed though, one big difference to 1996/7 was that then we went up automatically as runners up, which won't be good enough in this league. I also wonder if we've seen the best of Fryers, Fish, Raiky etc. How many loan players can we have at any one time (or in a season) though?

I think clubs can name 5 loan players in any given game (includes bench) but can take plenty of loans across a season: 12 on a short term basis and 8 long term.
As for additions to the squad, a Quigley understudy continues to appear a necessary hunt to be on in my view.

I work with a couple of Bradford City season ticket holders who are both sad to see Olly Crankshaw leave. They also said that the talk on the terraces at Valley Parade is that we paid £200k for him.

That's so hard to believe or indeed accept, especially given the type of financial restraints we've had for the best part of ten years, but it really wouldn't surprise me if it's true. It's a lot of money, but if we go up and he plays his part it'd be money well spent.

Agreed on your last point, Gazz. And, to be fair, Crankshaw is already looking good value.
