The extent to which County fans still obsess over beating City 20 years ago is embarrassing.
We beat United 1-0 in 1937 .. don't hear that mentioned much...

Agreed, in some ways the years in National League North almost made the Halcyon days of the 90s seem like a different club. Now I’m as proud of our gates of 6000+ In NLN and that day at Nuneaton.

We've not had too much to get excited about though in recent years have we? Just the same way the England team have done nothing since winning the World Cup but a lot of fans still bang on about that don't they!

On the one hand I agree, but I do think some of their fans deserve to be reminded of them, MSM.
I had to get a train to the pre-season friendly in 2009/10 when Gary Ablett (RIP) was in charge, and some of the bile and vitriol being spouted by their fans who got on at various stops along the way had to be heard to be believed, not least when walking up the aisle as the Pyramid came into view.
A few of them had also got up and were walking up in front and behind me, tapping other passengers on their shoulders saying very loudly "Stockport's a s**t hole, isn't it, love?" which was to an old lady who was not best pleased.....then followed by various other comments to other passengers such as "they're all City fans here aren't they, mate?"...."f***ing dump this place, isn't it?"..... with the latter coming from a guy who looked like he'd spent the previous night sleeping in a skip.
While not all City fans are like that, there are those such as the ones mentioned above that deserve to be reminded of them, as regularly as possible!

Whilst I can sympathise, I have to admit it's the best 2 hours I've ever spent in a football ground

It's an age thing. Rather like the music of your childhood is the best, the football of your formative years is impressed on your memories. Most people on here are under 50 so only just got used to the 80s teams being crap before the miraculous upsurge which coincided with City's decline to the level where they were legitimate rivals.
I'm much older and in my early days watching County, I've stood next to Dave Ewing (City centre half) in the paddock in front of the main stand. There was literally no rivalry in the 60s and 70s and my personal favourite memories are more of the matches against Liverpool and West Ham.
Having said all that, that Paul Cook goal was a cracker and John Hardiker probably gets free drinks all night when he's in town.

Agreed, Archie. In the 60's it was Ok to support both County and one of United/City as we were hardly ever likely to meet in combat.
Although I do remember a famous 1-0 friendly game win against City when Tony Book scored an own goal in the first 3 minutes. Anyone coming on the later train from New Mills Newtown would have missed it !
Some little Manc. scrott tried to nick my scarf on the Pop side. I chased him down and wrestled it back and received a kick up the arse from a guy who thought I had started the scrap.
Huge indignation and a few choice words.
Of course the major highlight of our 10 competitive games together is the 5-0 win at home ................................... in 1902-03 season.
Archie and I missed that one though.

I missed the glory days as we had a young family and little money, so my memories are somewhat muted.
It's human nature to either remember the worst times and/or bad times and we have plenty of both.
City fans and other club fans probably helped County to survive during the Friday Go go County nights.
Great to get one over City and other well financed clubs but yes agree its not the be all and end all.
I'd be worried about us losing our soul as we climb the Leagues. I hope the club remains all inclusive and builds a good bond with the fans and we don't go too corporate.
