Precisely the right sentiments there, Gazz-man. And a far cry from some of the bile that is being flung around on social media when he is barely cold.
Unlikely that football will ever see his level of talent again. RIP.

Greatest player I've ever seen, you wouldn't knock him off the ball with a baseball bat, that goal he scored against England has to be up there as one of the greatest goals scored.

Unlikely that football will ever see Maradona's level of talent again. RIP. What was Shilton saying? Still bitter as fcuk over the hand of god.

Having looked again, mate, I think the one I saw might have been a fake, photoshopped one purporting to come from Shilts' account. At least, I HOPE it was...
I won't post the tweet on here - it's obscene. But go to Twitter, where 'Peter Shilton' is trending, and you will find it and can decide for yourself.

I can't see Shilts doing that, especially not at a time when he's just lost one of his great rivals in Ray Clemence.
If he has, then that's seriously disappointing.
Watch 'When Gary met Diego' for his explanation into that handball. It won't make you condone it, but it might make you understand why he did it.
For those unsure of Maradona's incredible talents:

Hopefully,Maradona had his faults but he was a genius on the football pitch.

Just for clarity, I'll never forgive him for that handball, but I can certainly look beyond that and see that we've lost the greatest of player ever to kick a regulation size 5 bag of wind.
Let the haters hate, it doesn't make a blind bit of difference to my own opinion of the man.

Some of the bile directed at the man on social media leaves me feeling mildly nauseous. He's paid for his character flaws with ill-health and premature death and yet there are those who think it's the perfect excuse to exercise their tiny minds. He was by a country mile, the greatest footballer of his generation and should be remembered as such and anyone not prepared to recognise that because of a single incident 34 years ago should be encouraged to f*** off and take their own character flaws with them.

He was a truly incredible footballer. Without him I don’t think we would be playing football the way we do now. He was as seismic a player as that. He showed that it was possible to do more than just kick a football. The way he caressed and controlled, shielded and shepherded, distributed and received the ball was an alien concept at the time.
As Gazz has said I cannot forgive him for the handball but I can acknowledge his genius.
As for the muppets pouring out abuse, they are the usual spineless keyboard warriors enabled by social media; emboldened by Brexit and enslaved by English exceptionalism.
RIP Diego
