During the lunch break at the Test, Mike Atherton recalled the time he played cricket against our former manager. "There was a lad called Andy Kilner, who went on to manage Stockport County. He was fast and tore lumps out of me."

I missed it myself, but it's great that Athers remembers that. It's not surprising to hear that Killer was a quick bowler, though, given the fact that his long throws were better than many a player's corners!
Cheers, Collinge.

I seem to remember that he opted to play cricket in Bolton, rather than travel down to Wembley with County, when he was still a Hatter (albeit an unused one), in 1992.

The Play-off Final, I think, matey.

Cheers, matey.
That does seem to show a pretty poor attitude, if I'm honest.

He did fall out of favour pretty quickly that season - which was a shame in itself, after he had been so crucial to our promotion push the previous term - and I think I am right in saying his sending-off at Birmingham during the autumn of '91 started the rot for him. He clearly wasn't in Danny's plans at the turn of the year, and went out on a couple of loans (Bury and Rochdale) while his club-mates back at EP were going all-out for Wembley on two fronts. I guess that, by the time the two trips were secured, he knew he was on his way... not that this would have really excused him, when we were still paying his wages, mind!

That's a fair assessment, Maccy.
I do remember the friendly against Rotherham after promotion, where we played in the Gordon Ford kit and Wardy had just been brought in. There were a few fans in the Pop Side (for some reason) shouting out for County to get their fingers out, when Killer shouted back: "give us a f***ing chance!" which, although he had a point, was not really the thing to do when you know that you're the cult hero.
His body language that first season in the third (League One) was not quite right either, as he didn't seem to have too much of a connection with the fans from what I saw. Whether he felt the step up for him was too much, I don't know, but he didn't seem as happy as he had during the promotion campaign.
Maybe this is why Danny stopped playing him?

Yes - I wonder whether fitness, one tier higher, might have been an issue for him?
It all started well on the first day of the campaign, when he put away two from the spot against Swansea - so he was all smiles that afternoon. But the magic from the first half of the year in the Fourth seemed pretty much to desert him after that.

He also hit both posts with one effort that day if I recall correctly

Although he didn't hit the other post, I think his shot hit the inside of one post and went rolling agonisingly across the goal line and out for a goal kick just past the other post. Killer hit the post with his penalty, if I remember correctly? Worst day ever following County away, not least because the Brum fans 'modified' our coach by 'removing' its back window.

Cheers Gazz. I just remember the groans and ooh and ahhhs. Details have faded in the last 20 odd years!
