If Cahill and Smalling are the answer, it was a very silly question in the first place. on what 'form' exactly is smalling's selection based? he's part of that man utd triangle of mediocrity that everyone was predicting bright futures for a couple of years ago, along with jones and cleverley.

Not seen anything to make me believe that more than 3rd in qualifying group is best we can hope for this summer.
Rooney needs to play deeper and allow Sturridge a more central flowing role. Shaw and Lallana look promising and Sterling playing a good position but still a little light. Henderson is a work in progress but a better option than Milner, Lampard, Barry, Carrick, Downing Parker etc etc.
Tyldesley says Cole played because he has a left foot !!!! What the chuff have Baines and Shaw got on the end of their left legs then ?
Who would be England Manager ? At least it sounds like we have a half decent song to accompany the team this time.

At last !!! A goal.
Full marks to Sterling for chasing and winning the corner in the first place.
Lallana the missing left footed midfielder?
Sturridge up front, simple game.

Is it just me or has Welbeck's introduction changed the tide completely, he's really helped us

good point Fudge.
Still think Rooney going off was Roy's best decision of the night.

Rooney needs to play deeper and allow Sturridge a more central flowing role. Spot on. I've said this about Rooney since he first put the shirt on, his best position is in the role Scholes took up in his younger days. In that position he can still get in among the goals, but he can also have a hand in the build up play with his passing ability.

We had a discussion on the Yuku forum just after England had qualified and this is what I said then:
'The squad that goes will almost certainly be based on recent squads plus players currently out injured. Assuming a clean sheet on injuries I reckon there's a core of certainties: GK - Hart, Forster Def - Walker, Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines, Cole, Jones, Smalling Mid - Gerrard, Wilshere, Townsend, Barkley, Milner Fwd - Rooney, Welbeck, Sturridge, Walcott That leaves room for: one goalie - Ruddy or Foster one forward - Lambert, Defoe or Sterling two midfielders or defenders - from Gibbs, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lampard, Carrick, Cleverley There's always one who comes from nowhere and the arguments are more often about fringe players who are unlikely to play much of a part anyway.'
Interestingly, there's three who have come from nowhere (or Southampton which is as near as makes no difference) in Shaw, Lallana and Rodriguez plus Henderson. One injury write-off so far in Walcott. As far as the earlier prediction goes, no change in the goalie choice. I think I'm right on the defenders although it will be a close call between Cole and Shaw. For the forwards, Walcott's injury will probably mean Sterling a definite and I'd lean towards Lambert for the last spot. Where it gets interesting is midfield because Lallana has come from nowhere to being a near certainty and Barkley and Milner will be a little less sure of their places. I'd still take both of them which would leave just one place in midfield between Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson and Lampard and, at the moment, I'd go with the Ox.

Watched some of the second half - not very impressed with most of them - just adds to my thinking that we won't get out of our group in Brazil!

i'd take henderson over milner for his drive. milner doesn't play much for his club, and when he does he only knows how to go backwards nowadays. i don't want cautious choices. i'm still thinking along the same lines as when we secured qualification - we're not going to win it so we might as well go big.
