I remember being taken as a young lad to watch City play Stoke. The excitement at the prospect of watching someone who to me was one of the real superstars of the game built during the week.....until the big day, and City were shite and the great man hardly touched the ball at all!

The most humble of superstars too, Yorks - a real gentleman. It's a terrible, terrible loss - the game has lost one of its true inspirational people. Even his name is heroic. Gutting news. RIP, Banksy.

That commentary "what a saaave.... Gordon Banks" still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

Pelé claims, without a hint of bitterness, that he is better remembered for the goal he didn't score than any of the thousand-plus he did! And this, coming as it does from the greatest-ever outfield player, is a pretty good place to start so far as appreciating just how fantastic and vital a 'keeper Gordon Banks was.
What a sad day. The game and the world have lost the ultimate gentleman-hero. RIP, Banksy.

Being from Northern Ireland I'm probably biased in saying Pat Jennings is the best keeper the world has ever seen.
Banksy would certainly be pushing him hard for top spot.
The word "Great" is used too often in my opinion, but Gordon Banks was Great.
RIP Banksy

I had never known of this before - but, apparently, the following dialogue took place in the aftermath of THAT save: " I thought that was a goal." (Pelé) " You and me both." (Banks) " You're getting old, Banksy, you used to hold on to them." (Bobby Moore) Utterly brilliant, all round.

Here's a nice tribute to Banksy from the great man himself: www.newsletter.co.uk/news/gordon-banks-set-the-standard-for-the-rest-of-us-pat-jennings-1-8807863

Not a sentence that often appears on a County forum, but... Nice one, Stoke!
