Market Harborough is your host this time around, so I shall hand you over to the man himself....
Having looked at all the sporty versions that have gone before in the letters A to F I thought I would take a different tack and look for manufacturers from different countries. I liked the names; Ganja Autoplant from Azerbaijan – but they only make trucks, Ginetta from the UK I thought should be a spirit maker not a racing car producer and Gillet from Belgium should make coats. So failing to find ones I liked – I chose a country – and the simplest to look at is China.
The 3 vehicles are all in current production and range from 52,000 Yuan (£5700) up to 159,000 Yuan ( £16500). But I’m not going to tell you which is the cheapie (but its probably obvious).
So first up:
The Geely Yuanjing S1 a cross over utility vehicle. Production started in 2017 and you can have a 1.4 or 1.5l engine in petrol only. Coming with a 5 or 6 speed gear box this has become a firm favourite with the well to do Chinese.
An interesting fact about Geely is that they now own Volvo! So do we expect to see this vehicle appearing in Scandinavia at any time – probably not.
Secondly for your deliberation:
Gonow’s Xingland (sounds more like a Panda’s name to me) also known as the Gonow Storry
An older model designed in 2013 for 2014 launch and still going strong, This MPV is very popular in all areas of China due to the large interior allowing 7 passengers or a lot of baggage to be transported. It appears to be a shameless copy of the Nissan NV200 with a few minor modifications.
You can have a 1.3lt or 1.5lt engine with a 5 speed manual gearbox version.
Thirdly would you want to drive?
Great Wall’s Haval H6
This crossover was introduced in 2011 and has been modified regularly as we move through the decade. It is available as a 1.5L, 2L, and 2.4L petrol engine and also has a 2L diesel engine. In addition there are 5 and 6 speed manual versions and a 4 speed automatic.
And yes, you can buy one of these in Europe as they are manufactured in China, and in Bulgaria making it the most popular SUV in China with well over a million built there.
Feel free to make your choice.
