www.stockportcounty.com/stopforth-leaves-stockport/Lots to digest in that article. From what I saw, he had great energy. For those of us who rely on the radio coverage it's very difficult to know how good he was, because JK was desperately in love with him. If he's carrying injuries and can't charge around like he used to, then it doesn't seem like a big loss, especially with Minihan returning to fitness. I imagine he was on reasonably high wages. Bit of a shame, but that's how things are at this level.

Bit of a shame, but that's how things are at this level. I think that sums it up perfectly, mate.

Seems as though the club were really fair with Gary, a shame, but it frees a bit of budget and I guess he was not in the plans for next year and therefore that made the decision just that little easier Good luck Gary

Certainly, his strengths were his workrate and his mentality to 'keep going' for the team - when they were to the fore, they hid his main weaknesses. However, without a starting position, he seems to have lost his match fitness quite badly. He had only been on 20 minutes in the recent league game v Brackley when, as we lost the ball in the run up to their goal, he was bending over tired. Thus, as the season progressed, the favourable comments about putting in the work of 2 players gradually progressed to direct or indirect comments about average PT players who run about without much thought because the weaknesses were showing through more.
I think it's fair to say that, like most (if not all) of the current players not signed up for next season, he was unlikely to be here. The freeing up of the wage on our side which can be used in the run-in or towards next season, while he gets to go enjoy football again, seems fair enough.

didn't rate him as a footballer, but rated his energy - he was generally buzzing around. was also a talker and a leader, and seemed to run on winning. not somebody to build a team around, but i think he could have been very effective in a midfield three, with the right players around him. best of luck to him.

Definately off the pace, 32 and doesnt want to go full time, cant commit to more fitness training so no great loss. He played well before he went to Oz and immediately when he came back.
I just hope we aren't following the Neil Young formula and paying Colne part of his weekly wage.

Good luck to him, I seem to remember a lot being said about him and there was a bit of buzz about him but has just kind of drifted out of mind. Hopefully he comes back with something to offer a Conference team, not a Conference North one!

Stott's a very capable young player with a decent future ahead of him but it's now a great opportunity for the original players JG put faith in to step up as starters and perform like we know they can. Although Clarke and O'Halloran may not have had the overall impact we had hoped, both will be fresh and have certainly looked physically good recently.
One thing that 'relaxes' me somewhat is that, compared with the midfield in the early season, any combination of Smalley/Clarke/O'Halloran now has Turnbull in front with the option of further securing things with Winter so to release Ball - as in the last game.
