wasn't exactly comfortable, but then home wins have been at a premium so it doesn't really matter. county were at it from the off, and took the lead early on when marsden turned on the pop side of the box, shooting towards the railway end, and hit it across the 'keeper into the far corner. 'keeper looked a bit slow to react and my cousin reckoned he should have saved it -it was from a bit of an angle- but a decent strike, and good to see him off the mark.
we had another chance not long after, with brodie getting good contact on a header, but putting it six inches over the bar. having won it, he probably should have scored. the game then began to even up as a contest. ian ormson was quickly out to block one effort, and then patted another up into the air. gainsborough managed to find the net with a good finish, but the flag had long been up.
second half took a while to get going, and a few subs were made, including west for anorua, who had run around a lot without ever really seeming to be in time for anything, and picked up an unnecessary booking right before half time by trying to act as judge, jury and executioner after a foul on a colleague. odejayi then replaced brodie, who had done alright, and we had a new front two.
at the other end, sean o'hanlon challenged for a second ball in the box but led with his right elbow, and had his left arm round their player for good measure. looked a stonewall pen from our angle, and ormson, as he does on pens, visually didn't inspire confidence, as he looks quite small in the goal. wasn't the worst penalty in the world, but ormson got down to tip it round his left hand post and out for a corner. great stuff, and enabled us to keep the platform we'd had for most of the game.
we hadn't made a great load of chances, but big kay apparently did something wonderful to put marsden in. despite the fact that it was very cold, i was nodding off at that point, and was only roused by the excited buzz created by marsden having a shooting opportunity. he got plenty on it, but the 'keeper got something on it too, only not enough to stop it thunking home. gainsborough had the better chances after that - ormson made a great save from a close in header, and they hit the post late on, but we already had a cushion.
was a bit disappointed with the attendance, and it was also pretty quiet for most of the game. was glad we had the minute of applause for eric webster, and thanks to the trinity fans for joining in for the full thing. hopefully the game will have done ian ormson's confidence the world of good - he even had a (crap) 'der-der-der-der...ian ormson' chant several times. he hit one excellent goal kick/pass to put us on the front foot, and although his saves were largely the sort you'd expect to be made, both the penalty save and the late block were excellent. was definitely man of the match. swallows/summers though - his agility in shot-stopping has never been in doubt. would be great if he goes to the end of the season just solid, no blunders, then we'll have some proper competition for the shirt.
danny morton plays the right wing a bit like a rhinoceros with a lit firework up its bottom. shortest route to everything - he seemed to try and carry the ball through their defenders at every opportunity. while this obviously didn't work, i wouldn't be too averse to seeing him there again, although i thought we missed jamie menagh's delivery at set pieces. the back four were fairly decent, apart from o'hanlon's inexplicable challenge in giving away the penalty. i've watched the clip above, and it looked far worse from our angle - i was worried he'd get sent off for leading with an elbow. i feel like we need to see more from karl ledsham, and anorua, while working hard, didn't actually do anything. brodie held it up well a few times, and marsden, perhaps buoyed by his early goal, had his best game for us.
must admit, i was a bit irritated by the pure coverage today. the pre-match about jim's homecoming and the missing hordes all returning to edgeley park (they didn't), and the coverage about ormson (unbalanced as it rightly listed the positives, but then redacted the rest, but at least he then went on to have a really good game); and the post-match, in which a non-attender would have thought county were the marvellous magyars was just daft. it was a win, with some good bits; but it made me wonder if that was what soviet state broadcasting was like in the 1950's...families would shiver in electricity-less hovels, sharing a cold potato, while outside megaphones blared marching band music interspersed with pronouncements about the glories of mother russia.
in short (at last), it was a win, and as such, welcome; but it wasn't all that...
