i always appreciate, even though he apparently wasn't anymore than workaday on guitar, piano or saxophone, that he was so musical in his approach. his music is full of clever little touches. at the end of 'ashes to ashes' on the 'my mother said, "to get things done, you'd better not mess with major tom"', the lyric goes over four bars, but the chords only go over three. therefore each repetition starts on the next chord down the line - effectively you're singing/playing the same repeating couplet/chord sequence, but because they're different lengths, you get:
Am G Dm Am my mother said to get things done, you'd better not mess with major tom G Dm Am G my mother said to get things done, you'd better not mess with major tom Dm Am G Dm my mother said to get things done, you'd better not mess with major tom
i'm not very technical, but i find it odd and i like it.
my favourite is in 'let's dance' just after 'because my love for you, would break my heart in two', it goes into the crescendo bit with the female backing vocals and him singing 'if you should fall, into my arms...'
to me, all of music convention would have the instrumental crescendo and "ah"s coming in as he sings 'if you should fall'. but it doesn't. it comes in a bar early, and it's dead dramatic, even if the idiosyncracy of it only occurred to me a couple of years ago. just a really interesting, odd choice. i wonder if that's why i find so many of these songs proper earworms - not just the melody, the lyrics or the vocal, but they're full of these touches, and some very deliberate pastiches (like 'starman' doing a 'somewhere over the rainbow' octave leap into the chorus). not at all about feel or authenticity, but about artifice - specific, always deliberate construction. the music is still here - it's a bright mind and ferocious manipulator of musical form that we've lost. how else could he turn folk into glam into blue eyed soul and THEN to berlin?

Great summary there, ars. I'd say that he didn't try to reinvent the wheel, he simply added a few spokes of his own!

Excellent, Maccy! It's a shame he didn't go with this version for the single, although both versions are brilliant I never really liked the key change in the single version. So I have always preferred this one:

Tue - or even Teu - versions for the price of one! No complaints from me, matey...

It's all good, Maccy, it's all Bowie - I could listen to him singing his way through a book of Carpet samples!

one of the great things about this forum is that the set up allows time for threads to breathe, and people to come back and add to them. i had a look at the bowie thread on yellowboard yesterday (or, typically, the two threads exactly the same), and it was mostly 'that's a f***er', 'RIP', 'didn't really rate him but understand he's important' kind of thing. this one on here has just been able to percolate over the ten days to let people's thoughts develop and bubble to the surface. you can't get that on there because of an individual thread's mayflower lifespan due to the forum style.

Agreed, mate, this is one of the main reasons I am so grateful to the Admin team here for taking the plunge with Proboards. I do read Marionsboard a lot, and there are some good threads on there, but they get lost so quickly with 'PM for ....' threads, and multiple threads announcing the same County goal or other news. They've actually got a Proboards board already set up, they just seem so unwilling to embrace it though for some reason. That said, it's how they like it so it clearly works for them, and the world would be a boring place if we all had the same ideas.

Nearly a thousand hits on this thread tells its own story! Many thanks to all who have been contributing, watching and listening...

It's all good, Maccy, it's all Bowie - I could listen to him singing his way through a book of Carpet samples! As indeed he does on Hunky Dory, with Eight Lino Poem! Did I say that?

I don't know about you, matey, but I'm going to keep it going for the time being at least.
There's always room for Bowie!

Another brilliant example of the Deram era storyteller!
