It's been in the news recently that Mr. Defoe is the latest European to exile to North America to play in the ever-expanding MLS, signing for Toronto FC, all pretty unremarkable given the current reputation the MLS has as a retirement home for football's biggest stars, Defoe has however said that he still hopes to make England's World Cup squad for the Summer, I for one hope he does, whilst it's true that Toronto don't have the same big name clout as Tottenham, I don't think he should be excluded from the squad just because he isn't in an 'elite' league, I don't expect England to win the World Cup but if we are to make the Quarter Finals, we'll need squad depth, something I think Defoe provides very well...
Would you take him, despite playing in the MLS?

It would make him an easy target for the English media if he went to Brazil and underperformed. Questions would be asked of Hodgson saying "why take him if you couldn't see him play in this 'inferior' league?"

However, goals win games, and in tight games you need to get the ball away early and sharply, and for me there is no English forward better than Defoe at that at the moment. I'd take him personally, for the reason I've stated above. The British media would rip into the squad if we had Maradona and Zidane (at their peak) in there, so f**k 'em. Yes for me.

I think the media would be asking about the English selection process if we had Maradona and Zidane in the squad but I get your point!

in tight games you need to get the ball away early and sharply you're right that he's a very good early hitter of the ball, and he scores some great fizzing rockets of goals. i still associate him with the failures in 2010 though and wonder at the fact that successive spurs managers haven't played him very much at all. no for me, but then i'd only be taking about a six man squad with the players i think are good enough...

He's a striker and needs service which is why I thought he struggled in 2010. For me the most natural finisher we have had for the last 5 years or so I cannot understand why he doesn't play more.
Managers must see something they don't like in training

He is the most gifted finisher we have, but there is clearly something in his game that managers do not like or have as much faith in. It's a shame, because I really rate him as a goalscorer.
