I suppose that it will be a while before we really find out in this case, Duds, given that County won't now play Gainsborough again until next season. Would be extremely disappointed and angry, however, if, when the time comes, and in the event that Liam Davis turns out for Trinity, the overwhelming reaction is anything other than along the lines of yours.
I remember watching County play at Torquay in the early '90s, when Justin Fashanu was playing for the hosts. A handful of small-minded County followers gave him some sickening homophobic abuse as the game started, which had two consequences: Fash himself responded in the best possible way, superbly controlling the game and inspiring his team to a 2-0 victory (one of the rare occasions when I have come away from a County game feeling quite chuffed for the opposition); and most of the rest of us in the away end physically distanced ourselves from those who were chanting. Both of these developments combined to shut them up well before the half-time whistle blew.
That was over twenty years ago, and at that time, of course, Fashanu was alone in having come out as a professional footballer. Nowadays, with only a handful more having followed suit since, I don't kid myself that all sections of supporters would automatically disregard a player's sexuality for the irrelevance to football that it should be - but I would certainly hope that those who might not could be quickly made to realise the error of their ways. Ejections and bans, if imposed consistently, can focus the minds - even of the mindless...

I'd like to think that the majority of our fans are mature enough to not make an issue of it. There's as much room for that as there is for racism etc. and it should be stamped out. I agree, anyone caught giving him homophobic abuse should be ejected and banned.

Ejections and bans, if imposed consistently, can focus the minds - even of the mindless... and if it doesn't, then s*d them (as it were) - they'll no longer be in the ground anyway. it's slightly different to racist abuse in that where that is now taboo in most circles, many people still make gay jokes and wind-ups, very often about their straight friends, which while they are pejorative, aren't meant in the wholly hateful way that racist abuse is. it's a slight difference, but it is nevertheless there. that's a slightly more difficult thing to deal with, but outright abuse, such as that which sol campbell received from the spurs fans, has to be dealt with strongly.

A witty comment I read.
"How brave of Thomas Hitzelsperger to come out and admit
that he played for Aston Villa."

It simply shouldn't matter, if a footballer is entertaining to watch and tries his hardest, why should it matter?
You wouldn't care if an IT Technician was or an Electrician, it's someone doing a job they're good at, sexuality is completely irrelevant in my opinion!
Good post, Duds!

not entirely liked over at the non-league forum: "100% agree, he's still a mouthy dwarf t**t, regardless of his sexual preferences."
