On the plus side at least Ledsham will be fresh... He'll probably have backache by 90 mins !!!

sh&t happens.
I blame that single magpie I saw out on the dog walk this morning !!
Even with a keeper coming off the bench you can't survive with only 9 men.

I know Len, but you can't just hope that every time your keeper gets injured or sent off, someone else has already been sent off so it doesn't matter anyway. Four subs is plenty at any level, we all remember when teams only had three: You can only bring on three of them anyway, so I don't see any benefit to having five to pick from rather than four. Not really a calculated risk, more an accident waiting to happen. A real pet hate of mine this (obviously)...
Feel sorry for anyone who went to the game. Must have felt a bit Carlton-Palmer-era today!

Today was the first match I've persuaded Sandy Jnr to go to in a while, and he was really looking forward to it. I even got him a brand new shirt with his name and age on the back which he was made up with.
We sat there before kick off and he wanted me to run through corners, goal kicks, substitutions... and yellow/red cards.
He couldn't wait for the match to start.
Fast forward to half-time and he's in tears wanting to go home because "the referee has ruined it now"

Not really a calculated risk, more an accident waiting to happen. It's a bit of both, but the events of today have made it difficult for him to justify not having a 'keeper on the bench in the future.

I agree jumbo that there should be a keeper on the bench. Negligent to do otherwise.
Going down to 9 just compounds the issue when one of those sent off is the keeper. 9 vs 11 is always going to end in tears.

Another game totally ruined by another useless referee, card happy when dealing with our players but letting their players off lightly or not even punishing them. Another referee who needs to go back to ref school. Where does this League get them from? 2 home matches running now.
Have to say we got 100% effort from our 9 players. Ledsham was thrown in the deep end as a goalie and made some fine saves. Pity though that Ormson wasn't on the bench to start with.
Young needs to have a word - we still need to stop giving away stupid free kicks. One of there's hit the underside of the bar so we were lucky there. Our 9 held them for 25 minutes, but all in all a very poor Vegas side. 3-0 seriously flatters them.

still quite angry. it's clear that NY will make significant -and early- changes from the bench if necessary. he ensures he has as much scope as possible to do so by naming five outfield players. i don't really have a problem with that, because already his substitutions have positively affected games - those at FCUM and nuneaton being good examples. that said, on the odd occasion it does get exposed...well...
i wondered early on, when staly were bossing things, whether he'd made too many changes to the starting line up. afterall, a point at nuneaton wasn't that broken. obviously had to make the forced change early, when robinson limped off, which meant both of our new recruits were on, as well as garvin in at left back, gonzales up front, and the welcome return of baggie on the right.
staly were the better team, and indeed hit the underside of the bar with a crashing effort. we didn't get away with much else though. one of theirs went through glenn rule out in front of the benches. caused rule to land on top of their player and you could see he'd lost his rag and tried to get up and kind of scrabbled at him. after a bit of handbags, their player chased after the ref and repeatedly pointed out a mark on his thigh over the next couple of minutes. i assumed glenn had raked him with his studs, but somebody connected to the club on staly's (delusional) forum is stating it was a bite. hope this isn't the case, because it's likely we won't see rule for a while -over and above the three games for violent conduct- if that's the case. i said even in pre-season that he'd be one getting sent off during the season. prior to today, i'd been saying that i like his bite. didn't mean it literally.
hurst got his hands on the ball above his head, realised where he was, and dropped it immediately. definitely wasn't a deliberate bit of foul play. you could tell from how close to the 18 yard line the free kick was taken that even the ref accepted that he'd only marginally strayed. will be interesting to see the video, because it looked to me like there were defenders around - how clear a goalscoring opportunity was it? the EP crowd then piped up for the rest of the half in support, and joined NY in berating the ref at half time.
inevitably, we were ruined for the game. any time we committed people forward and lost the ball, they were breaking in numbers with us outnumbered at the back. when we defended set pieces, we couldn't leave anyone outside the box, so that enabled them to recycle any clearances into further attacks. although sefton gonzales put in a herculean effort, winning so much that was hit in his direction, there was mostly no-one around to pick the ball up off him, and that would set them off again. finally, it also meant they were having to cover so much extra space and constantly chase opposition possession when -just to put a final f***ing cherry on it- we have another game 48 hours later. they'll all be knackered.
their first goal was down to ledsham - the ball going in a very low trajectory just over him in the six yard box from a corner, and being nodded in. the second was a great strike. the third he was waving the ball past the post and instead it nestled in the corner. was pleased he made a couple of decent saves, a block with his feet and a dive to his left, as well as taking a couple of catches...but he doesn't look a lot like a 'keeper, other than the green shirt.
positives were that when we weren't defending the alamo of the railway end goal, we did try and put a few things together up the other end. ellison whipped a quality cross in which ordinarily ought to have found someone, dyson and montrose had decent efforts off target, and there were a couple of scrambles caused by long throws. nothing though, would fall to us enough to enable a reduction in the deficit. ellison had a very good game after coming on, paul connolly was good, montrose and gonzales in particular, ran themselves into the ground, chasing everything. the 12th man was actually a 12th man for the first time in a long while, staying with the team through long periods of staly possession second half, with plenty of songs and even more applause for everything positive coming from any of our battlers. was pretty heartening actually that neither the team nor the supporters gave up - we've seen a lot of games where the opposite has happened.
very good attendance. i have checked, and it is 13 miles via the M60 from EP to bower fold. dunno where they got lost on the way, because the staly following was pathetic. their forum is absolutely delusional, like they were a class act today, when actually they were time wasting while 2-0 up, facing nine men including a rushback goalie. i'm assuming they've qualified for the cup winners cup as a result of today. resolutely small time, and i resent how they've managed to turn it into a needle match on the pitch over the last few games. in no way local rivals. just local.
