They're not members of the government, though, Eps, they're not the ones making the rules and then breaking them - because the ones who did are the only real hypocrites in this situation. I totally agree they're all wrong 'uns for breaching the lockdown, matey, but that's not the point Fudgie is making - let's not muddy the waters here. Absolutely agreed that the ones in government are held to higher account. And unelected advisors probably even more so. However, these 4 labour MPs have been voted for by their constituents to represent them in parliament. I’ve not checked, but I assume that all 4 agreed with the lockdown rules set out by the government. I’ve not detected any politicians with dissenting voices on that initial decision or as time has progressed. I’m more than happy to be corrected on that. Although, even if they did disagree, I’m sure the Labour Party would want their MPs to tow the ‘we’re all in this together’ line. As local constituency MPs, they have a responsibility to uphold the rules (and the law) as examples to those that elected them. All 4 failed to do this on at least one occasion. I agree that their hypocrisy is not as galling, as it is more at a local level, but is still hypocrisy. I guess I’m just frustrated at what the MSM has become which is chasing populist stories to get clicks to drive advertising revenue (I’m talking in general and not specifically about this story - I’m no defender of Cummings). I know the tv and press have always been biased and now largely report twitter trends, but this situation has revealed it to be worse than I thought. That’s what gets me down - hence my post. Entirely agree with your summation however, the guilty Labour MP's haven't been given an opportunity to make a public statement. Johnson and Cummings have and, rather than admit to a monumental folly and apologize they chose arrogant disregard for everyone, they chose to not only brazen it out but to lie through their back teeth. No apology required for me in particular, the severest hardship I've had is not being able to see my son for weeks but such as a friend of mine whose father was on end of life support and who never got the chance to say goodbye or go to his funeral. When confronted with the opportunity to do the decent thing they preferred to take every last one of us for a mug punter.

I understand that everyone believes that they're a special case and many people will have 'bent' the rules over the last couple of months. On what would have been her birthday, I drove 5 miles to where my late wife's ashes were spread to spend a few minutes with her. I live on my own and didn't come within 2 metres of anyone on that trip but, not only was it against the UK rules, it was also against the law in Wales. I would have been quite happy to cough up £60 had I been stopped and questioned and I would also have been quite happy to express regret that my own NHS area had been subjected to a marginal extra risk.
Cummings has expressed no regret at putting a different NHS area at risk and using their resources. He quite clearly thinks that the rules that he created for everyone else don't apply to him. By standing by him, Johnson is underlining the us and them gulf in our society and, with any luck, it will come back and bite him. His surly and truncated performances in the briefings on Sunday and Monday showed all the signs of someone who is losing it and a proper examination by this week's committee plus more forensic stuff from Starmer when parliament is back in session is the least that we are due.

on another note, the BBC bumped 'Paddington 2' for the daily briefing yesterday.
however, at least the briefing was done by someone who looks like he keeps marmalade sandwiches in his hair, although unlike our favourite peruvian, his bumbling is costing lives.

I've said it many times to Yorks and now I'm going to say it to you, mate, you should be writing stuff like this for a wider audience - that is top class satire!

An apology and saying he was desperate might have got a few sympathy votes from daily mail readers, but he’s totally lost it. There are some heartbreaking stories through lockdown which makes Cummings lack of contrition unforgivable.

Notice on the press briefing follow up questions are being denied.Peston was silenced with 1 short question. And he's not the only one.
They are clearly running scared.

THIS NEEDS TO BE POSTED EVERYWHERE. Never a more succinct assessment of that fat, lying oaf.
