I have a sneaking suspicion Truss will not make it as leader to the next election. With their popularity ratings already low there is virtually no support for what Kwarteng announced yesterday. There are a lot of Tory MP’s looking at narrow majorities are going to be sharpening their knives in fairly short order so let’s not be surprised if the Tories treat themselves to another opportunity to choose a PM. Given the poverty of talent in the contemporary party, expect Johnson to make a quick return. How could it be anything else? The idea that Jacob Rees-Mogg could appear in the cabinet of any serious government is beyond parody.

I wonder if JRM doesn’t fancy a tilt at the job himself…

Jacob Rees-Mogg - The Secretary of State for the 18th Century. AKA The Haunted Victorian Pencil! How the hell have we got to this?

The idea that Jacob Rees-Mogg could appear in the cabinet of any serious government is beyond parody. It was pointed out at the time in some media outlets that, since the Tory leadership rules were changed giving the membership the final say, Truss is the first PM not to have been the choice of a majority of her MPs. She appears to be banking on the view that another leadership election will lead to many of the dissenters losing their seats at a general election.

When I said earlier in this thread that I doubted she'd lead the Tories into the next election, what I actually meant was that I doubted she'd lead the Tories at Christmas. Where do they keep dredging these f**kwits up from? And as for Hunt, f*** me! This is the clown who decided in the wake of a trial run into how the NHS would perform in during a potential pandemic decided that the 7th biggest economy in the world couldn't afford to stockpile PPE, man who paraded his macho taker-of-the-tough-decision persona by pissing doctors off to the point that record numbers were leaving the NHS. In other words, yet another Tory tw@ whose incompetence has got us to the point we're currently at.

I've never felt so disconnected from my own nation as I do right now. And that's the point in a nutshell isn't it. They've destroyed so much that was once considered good about this country, monetised almost everything so that it can be exploited for cash and divided the country so badly that how can one feel any pride in the place. Console yourself mate, you can support decency, or you can support the Tories. I know which side of that particular divide you stand.

If I’d know that Brexit would lead to the complete destruction of the Tory party, I would have voted for it.

Silver lining for Kwasi Kwarteng: he was chancellor for eight days longer than Iain Macleod. And unlike Iain Macleod, at least leaves office alive.

The problem is that the Labour Party are offering little evidence that they will pursue anything other than their own version of neo-liberalism. It may not be the steroid fuelled version of it that Truss, Kwarteng and the Tufton Street crazies whose ideas she promoted but it's neo-liberalism nonetheless. Reeves, the shadow chancellor might as well be employed by the Bank of England.
In the face of war, climate change and severe post-covid disruption (perhaps not even post-covid since it is clearly still with us, despite official attempts to ignore it), a fairly radical change of direction is called for. I don't see Starmer and co delivering it.
