Another Sunday, another 90 minutes in goal, another draw.
A quiet first half where we managed to get ourselves 1-0 up. I saved a downward header which bounced away off my knee but came back with a bit of backspin. The highlight for me was with two minutes until half-time a throw in was shielded back to me. Everyone ran upfield waiting for me to pick it up. I just ran the clock down. One player even asked "How long ref?" indicating that I was time wasting. A reply of "As long as he likes" from our centre back made him approach me so I waited until he was close and picked it up. A few sarcastic comments of "Nice one mate" were ignored. It amazes me how many players get to play over 35's and still don't know the rules.
The second half was like Rorke's Drift with wave after wave of attacks repelled by great defending and not so great goalkeeping. A ridiculous penalty decision with about 15 minutes to go was hit wide after I'd guessed the right way to dive after watching which way the penalty taker was looking. Our resistance was finally broken about 5 minutes from time when a corner was glanced in off the striker's head. Maybe a proper keeper would've dealt with one of the earlier corners to take the pressure off a shellshocked defence? We'll never know.
Not as enjoyable as last week but happy with a point, a missed penalty and an almost clean sheet.

Good stuff, Downy. Still unbeaten between the sticks, too - most impressive!

Superb, result again, Downy. Never mind the 'what if' regarding their goal though. Your team got a valuable point and you were in goal. Also, considering it's only your second time in the gloves, and after coming back from an horrendous injury, it's job bloody well done if you ask me.
Well done, mate, keep it going, and keep these excellent reports coming too. I'm really enjoying reading them!

sounds a good point that downy. if it was one way traffic second half, it must have been a decent defensive performance (or a particularly profligate attacking one) to only concede one.

Downey, don't forget to go big shouty Michael schmeilchly when the defence let you down, ie whenever you concede a goal -any goal !

Sounds like a superb effort mate! Having played in net I know how difficult it can be. Especially considering this is a new position for you effectively!
Really well played mate!

I couldn't blame anyone for the one we conceded after the way we'd defended although I am very shouty.
I've played a couple of times in goal before many, many years ago but I was quickly relieved of my duties. The last time was about 5 years ago when I went in for the last 20 minutes of a cup game when the keeper went off injured. Never having much success I'll add!
I've put my hand up for some goalie training alongside the first team's keeper at the next session so I'll see how that goes.
And thanks everyone for the kind comments.

Just to add, we played in our new kit on Sunday which included a new orange goalie shirt. Would probably fit an under 12's keeper. It showed off every unflattering curve. Think: Attachments:

A guy from Offerton played for us last season, not a County fan though. I know loads of Mancs, they all seem to stick together.
Albradley3am's brother is over here but I've not managed to meet up with him yet.

Don't suppose you know the Nicholson family? From Stockport?
They moved there in 2007, their lad Tom has just moved to Dubai to play golf.
