I've been watching the documentary 'Brian Clough - The Greatest Manager England Never Had?' for about the hundredth time, and some of the quotes from Cloughie were just pure genius, such a sharp man. So I though I'd start off a thread for favourite quotes, and I don't just mean in Football or even just sporting quotes, I mean life in general. What's the best quote, remark or exchange of words that you've heard?
I'll start off with this little exchange between Cloughie and John Motson from this documentary, the clip looks like it was around the time of his last season in football with Forest:
Motson: "Before we leave the FA entirely, what do you make of the Premier Lea.."
Cloughie interrupts: "where do you want to leave them, John?........"
Motson interrupts back: "Well, I just thought before we leave the subjec.."
Cloughie interrupts again: "Are they goin' in the Manchester Canal?"
Motson now laughing: "Well, I think you're gonna give them a hand, aren't you?"
Cloughie: "Well, they wouldn't get in for prams!"
Christ on a bike I'm near in tears laughing here, lol, what a man! This was a quickfire exchange too, no pause for response from Cloughie, he was razor sharp. God, I wish he was still around now, an absolute genius.
Anyone else got any gems they care to share?

Excellent, gazza. There are a few 'best of' Cloughie-quotes lists knocking about, but this is one of the best (and it actually seeks to do some good in his memory, too): www.brianclough.com/new_page_2.htm

i know we need to diversify from cloughie, but "Rome wasn't built in a day. But I wasn't on that particular job." is genius.
i also loved the bit on 'the big match' where they play him the muhammed ali interview in which he says "clough, i've had enough...stop it" about cloughie's reputation as a chatterbox. brian moore asks "well, are you going to stop it?" and cloughie replies "no, i want to fight him!"....

Brilliant that. The film 'The Damned United' wrongly shows that Ali quote taking place at home with his family and has Tim Spall as Peter Taylor asking him that question. If the movie isn't half as fabricated as the book, then it's no wonder the Clough family (rightly) kicked off over the book so much.

Jimmy Armfield:-
Once I was Jimmy Armfield, new youngster on the block at Blackpool, then I became Blackpool's player of the year, later the Blackpool star, then the famous England International full back. After I retired I was soon the ex-Blackpool and England stalwart, and then called the legendary BFC and England player.
The older I become the better player I was !!

"At a football club, there's a holy trinity: the players, the manager and the supporters. Directors don't come into it. They are only there to sign the cheques."

your everton quote was better, but i also liked "if everton were playing at the bottom of my garden, i'd pull the curtains",
(at dixie dean's funeral) "i know this is a sad occasion, but i'm sure dixie would be amazed to know that even in death he could draw a bigger crowd than everton on a saturday afternoon"

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career, lost almost 300 games, missed the game- winning shot 26 times. I’ve failed over and over again in my life. That is why I succeed. – Michael Jordan
